- Prehistoric settlement in the area of what is now
Kaiserslautern has been traced to at least 800
B.C. - Kaiserslautern received its name from the
favourite hunting retreat of Holy Roman Emperor
Frederick Barbarossa who ruled the Holy Roman
Empire from 1155 until 1190. - The French repeatedly invaded and occupied the
area, residing in Kaiserslautern in 16861697.
The entire Palatinate was the scene of fighting
between French and German troops throughout the
18th century. In 1713, the French destroyed
Barbarossa's castle and the city's wall towers.
From 1793 until Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo in
1815, the area was under French administration.

- In World War II, more than 60 of Kaiserslautern
was destroyed by bombs from Allied aircraft. Of
the 20,000 homes, 11,000 were destroyed or
damaged. - On 20 March 1945, as the last of Omar Bradley's
1st Army crossed the Rhine at Remagen, the U.S.
80th Division, 319th Infantry, part of George
Patton's 3rd Army, seized Kaiserslautern without
resistance. After the war was over, the
construction for newly established garrisons of
American troops brought economic growth to the
area. Even today Americans play an important role
in Kaiserslautern.

- Appearances of international jazz, rock and
cabaret celebrities in the Kulturzentrum Kammgarn
attract fans from all over the South-West. - The unique location of the city in the Palatinate
Forest offers ample possibilities for sports and
leisure time activities in a natural environment. - One can enjoy life in the many pubs and cafés in
the Old Quarter of Kaiserslautern. - Special events like the Skate Nights or the
Mobile ice-skating rink during the winter time
attract a lot of people.

- The Fritz Walter Stadium belongs to the most
beautiful arenas of Germany - It was renovated at the beginning of the 90's.
- This heart of the Kaiserslautern sports
provided 48,500 seats for the Soccer World Cup in
2006. - During the Soccer World Cup, about one million
visitors watched the five matches at
Fritz-Walter-Stadion, gathered for the Public
Viewing, or populated the World Cup Mile.
