Title: Theme: series: Jesus claim to deity

1
I Am The True Vine
  • Theme series Jesus claim to deity

2
Introduction
  • Up to this point in Johns gospel is Jesus claim
of deity primarily to His detractors
  • I Am the Bread of Life the giver/sustainer of
    eternal life.
  • I Am the Light of the world who leads the way
and is the source of salvation.
  • I am the Door and the Good Shepherd also the
    way and source of salvation.

3
Introduction
  • The final I am statements Jesus now makes His
claim are primarily among His disciples.
  • Jesus wants His followers to have the conviction
of who He is, even if they are not fully
comprehending the fullness of His claims.
  • As noted in the previous lesson these claims are
meant to build the faith of His disciples before
He leaves them to rule from heaven. Cp. 1 Pet.
    321-22

4
Background to Jesus Claim
  • Jesus made claims regarding Himself to be someone
on par with deity, of which many detractors
  • Walked with him no more. Jn. 666
  • Wanted to conspire against Him. Matt. 1214
  • Ultimately, wanted to kill Him. Jn. 1153

5
Background to Jesus Claim
  • The very claims which brought hate and rejection
against the Son of God from detractors, brought
forth belief and trust from His true followers.
    Cp. Jn. 316-18
  • Before Jesus even made His claim of deity
Nathanael believed He was the Son of God. Jn.
    145-51
  • The disciples response after Jesus asked them
who do you say I am. Matt. 1613-16
  • Martha agreed with Jesus statement about being
the resurrection and the life. Jn. 1125-27

6
The Claim of Jesus I Am the Vine
  • The setting is quite clear and easy to
    understand. Jn. 151-5
  • Jesus is the vine.
  • The Father is the vinedresser.
  • Jesus disciples are the branches.

7
The Claim of Jesus I Am the Vine
  • What Jesus DID NOT need to say
  • I am the Son of God for they already believed He
    was.
  • I came from heaven for they accept His claim.
    Jn. 638,68
  • Yet, His exhortation/warning was also explicitly
    clear. Jn. 156-7
  • Apart from Jesus, His disciples do not have life.
  • Thus, to abide in Jesus is paramount to having a
    relationship with the Father.

8
The Claim of Jesus I Am the Vine
  • The purpose for His claim fellowship with the
Father and the Son. Jn. 158-11
  • That Jesus joy would be (dwell) in those who
believe and abide in Him. Cp. Jn. 1713
  • That their joy would be made full. Cp. Jn. 1010

9
Conclusion
  • We have seen through this series that as the
apostle John records throughout his gospel
account of Jesus that He as Jesus claimed is
    none other than God Himself.
  • He was sent from the Father to this world.
  • In addition to being the Son of man, He was the
    Son of God.
  • All who believe and abide in Him, therefore,
would have fellowship and eternal joy.
  • Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God as
    your Savior?
