DCE

• DCE Data Communications Equipment. The local
  and/or remote modem. A DCE is usually connected
  to a DTE.

DTE

• DTE Data Terminal Equipment. The computer or
  terminal, either local (yours), or the remote
  (the one you're communicating with). A DTE is
  usually connected to a DCE.

IP Address and Subnet Mask

• IP Address vs. Mailing Address
• e.g. 192.168.0.1
• Every device in the network has an IP address.
• Subnet Mask
• The scope of the network
• The Subnet Mask is a bit pattern which is used to
  mask off the network portions from the station
  portions of the address.
• e.g. 255.255.255.0

FQDN URL

• A fully qualified domain name (FQDN) consists of
  a host name and domain name, including top-level
  domain.
• Example www.wahyan.edu.hk
• URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is the global
  address of documents on World Wide Web.

• What is a DNS Server?

DNS Server (2)

• The Domain Name System (DNS) is a distributed
  internet directory service. DNS is used mostly to
  translate between domain names and IP addresses.
  It is involved in email delivery services we use
  everyday.

Windows Network Command (1)

• ipconfig
• Show the network configuration of this computer.
• e.g. ipconfig, ipconfig /all
• ping
• Test whether a node in the computer network is
  reachable or not.
• e.g. ping (IP address), ping 192.168.0.1

• Ask the DNS server for the IP address of a domain
  name given.
• e.g. nslookup
