FACULTY OF SCIENCE, PHYSICS REASEARCH - Lasers
Optics - Semiconductor Lasers
Semiconductor Lasers - 99.8 of the world
market for lasers (800 million units
2005) - 59 of the monetary value of the
world market (AUD5 billion) The high
volume arises due to their use in
optical storage systems
telecommunications solid state laser
pumping medical therapeutics
inspection, measurement control.

We Research Nonlinear Dynamics in Semiconductor
and Solid State Laser Systems
Applications areas for these systems are secure
communications and random number generators
plus theyre excellent systems in which to study
experimental nonlinear science to transfer to
other areas physiological and financial systems

  • Recent Research Highlights
  • Proposing new integrated device designs for
    chaotic semiconductor lasers.
  • Invention and demonstration of a hybrid
    electronic/optical synchronised chaos
    communication system

  • First use of Chaos data analysis to produce
dynamical maps for experimental output of
    optically injected
  • solid state laser systems (Optics Express

Laser removal (circular beam profile) of a
gelatine coating (image left) from a region of
black (A) and white (B) pigment. The boundary
between the uncoated and coated region is marked
with an arrow. Image right shows successful
removal of paraloid from a different section of
the same paintingwhite pigment (B) and red ochre
(C).
The shell is from a shell necklace that has
suffered smoke damage. Using the excimer laser
facility three regions exposed to increasing
laser fluence, left to right, are shown. It is
possible to obtain an optimum clean with no
damage to the patina of the shell (middle spot).
Excessive laser power does damage the patina
(rightmost spot).

Electric discharge plasmas under development as
Ultraviolet and Extreme ultraviolet incoherent
light sources Highlights from UV/VUV source
research include 1.   US patent awarded in 2003
for high-peak power ultraviolet DBD
lamps. 2.    ARC Linkage Project grant to
develop specific lamps for applications in water
treatment and disinfection. 3.    Australian
representatives in the European Union funded,
COST Action 529 "Efficient Lighting for
the 21st Century". The consortium consists of
more that 60 University and Industry based
members from 18 European countries, and 5 other
associated (non-EU) countries 4.   Industry
sponsored project to develop EUV sources below
100nm based on our platform technology. 5. New
patentable lamp designs under development
