Title: Salters Advanced Chemistry Individual Investigation

1
Salters Advanced ChemistryIndividual
Investigation
  • Recording information, doing calculations and
    drawing graphs

2
Recording Information
  • Record data and information as you collect it
  • Use a specially dedicated book, not a flimsy
    piece of paper
  • Date each entry

3
Recording Data
  • Record data in tables
  • Record all data, not just averages
  • e.g. include start and end burette readings not
    just titres from a titration
  • Use detailed headings so it is clear what you are
    recording
  • Include appropriate units

4
Recording Data
  • If your data is poor quality, repeat the
    experiment, modifying conditions if needed
  • Example 1 - low titres from a titration
  • Example 2 - Gas given off too quickly or too
    slowly
  • Clock reaction goes too quickly or too slowly

5
Calculations
  • You will need to know how to calculate the number
of moles and the concentrations of solutions you
    are using
  • If you are using a titration you will need to
know how to do calculations arising from them

6
Graphs
  • Plot graphs from data you have collected straight
away Dont leave it until later
  • By all means use Excel but take care with the
    detail

7
Graphs
  • Make sure graphs use the full page
  • Include a detailed heading not just Experiment
    5
  • Label axes and include units
  • Think about drawing in the line by hand

8
Graphs
  • For kinetics experiments know the range of graphs
you can draw including log graphs and use of
    kinetic half life
  • For kinetics experiments know how to find
activation enthalpy from an Arrhenius plot
