1
Media Literacy - Grade 12
  • Mrs. Bomeisl

2
Why Study Media?
3
Joseph Goebbels, Nazi Minister of Propaganda
  • "If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating
it, people will eventually come to believe it.
The lie can be maintained only for such time as
the State can shield the people from the
    political, economic and/or military consequences
of the lie for the truth is the mortal enemy of
the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the
    greatest enemy of the State."

4
Malcolm X
  • The medias the most powerful entity on earth.
They have the power to make the innocent guilty
and to make the guilty innocent, and thats
power. Because they control the minds of the
    masses.

5
Media Course Description
  • This course emphasizes the skills required to
navigate a rapidly changing media environment to
    make meaning from numerous, often-disparate
sources to communicate with new or recent
technologies and to read and write for the
media including non print texts, like
    advertisements.

6
Media Course Description
  • Students will explore the social and political
implications of various media how media messages
can shape notions of reality, perpetuate or alter
stereotypes, and reinforce or undermine cultural
    barriers.

7
Media Course Description
  • In this course, students are expected to think
critically about arguments, synthesize ideas from
various texts, write with an effective style and
voice, undertake independent research, and use a
variety of strategies to earn the honor
distinction if he or she meets honor level
    learning goals on designated assignments.

8
Al Franken, "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell
Them", 2003
  • The biases the media has are much bigger than
conservative or liberal. They're about getting
ratings, about making money, about doing stories
    that are easy to cover.

9
Media Research Project
  • The research project will require that the
students identify a need or problem in society
(IE global warming, water shortages, alternative
    fuels, animal experimentation/cruelty, domestic
    violence, education).

10
Media Research Project
  • The students will then create various media
throughout the year in order to persuade or argue
for a change in policy or cultural attitude
    regarding that topic.

invited to join the Media Production and Theater
classes on a field trip to Los Angeles.

17
Outside Learning Experience
  • This 3 day trip usually includes a live theater
show, Universal Studios, MGM studios, Sony
Studios, visiting a PBS television station, and
attending a television taping among other
activities. More information will be available
regarding cost, etc., in the near future.

Grading
  • CFSD 4 Point Rubrics will be used.
  • Rather than percentage grades, students will
    receive 0, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4 according to
    the rubric.
  • Students who receive 3.5 or higher will
    automatically be considered honors candidacy.

19
Grading
20
Grading
  • Assignments are usually due electronically on the
given date by 1159 PM late work will be marked
    down.
  • If a student has circumstances that are affecting
performance, please see me to discuss the
possibility of alternate due dates or alternate
assignments. I will sometimes offer an
alternative due to a students ability, learning
style, or situation at my discretion.

21
Grading
  • If a student fails a project/assignment,
additional project/assignments may be assigned at
the discretion of the teacher in order to
    demonstrate competency. The original project
grade will stand, and the additional assignment
    will be averaged in.
  • A student cannot decide to skip a project and ask
    for a different one instead.
  • It is MUCH easier to complete the work assigned
than to take on additional tasks.

22
Grading
  • You can lead a student to knowledge, but you
