Graduate Education
  • The structure and goals of graduate education are
    quite different from undergraduate education
  • Undergraduate education is focused largely on
    mastering through class lectures, discussions,
and labs what scholars before us have learned
    through research
  • Graduate education is focused on learning to
    perform productive research and scholarship
    ourselves
  • The goal of graduate education is to become a
practicing scholar to become a productive
member of the community of scholars!

33
  • I want to welcome you to community of researchers
    and scholars at Purdue !
  • Im sure you have high expectations for the facts
and skills you will learn from us
  • But theres something else that you should expect
to acquire during the course of your Purdue
graduate education new values the values of a
    researcher/scholar.

34
Values .
  • All communities have values each of us arrives
at Purdue we a set of values we dont think
about them often, but (unconsciously) they guide
the choices and decisions we make every day.
  • Values learned
  • From our parents and grandparents and siblings
  • From our teachers and coaches and ministers
  • From our friends

35
Core values
  • A core value of the community of researchers and
    scholars is integrity!

36
Policy on Integrity in Research
  • Integrity in research is an essential part of
    Purdue Universitys intellectual and social
structure, and adherence to its spirit and
principles must be maintained. These principles
    include commitment to truth, objectivity,
    fairness, honesty, and free inquiry.

37
Broaden Your Expectations!
  • Id like to challenge you to broaden your
    expectations
  • By all means, you must learn the literature,
fundamental principles and tools of your
    discipline
  • But, it is also important to learn the principles
and standards of ethical behavior in research,
and the laws and regulations that govern the
    practice of research and scholarship.

38
Integrity in Research and Scholarship
  • Make a list and ensure that you learn the
    standards for
  • Data management, sharing and preservation
  • Authorship and publication
  • Giving appropriate credit to others
  • Ethical treatment of research subjects
  • Humans and vertebrate animals
  • Collaboration
  • Social responsibilities of a scholar
  • How do you learn these standards?
  • Ask your advisor!!

39
Welcome!
  • Let me end by repeating my welcome
  • Welcome to the community of Purdue researchers
    and scholars!
  • You have expectations for what we will give you,
we also have high expectations for what you will
contribute as a colleague and the extent to which
    your contributions will enrich us!
