Energy levels and sub-levels
  • These are broadly similar to the shells used in
    Grade 9 Chemistry

Energy level 1(n 1) is lowest in energy and
closest to the nucleus. It is called the ground
state and is the most stable level.
3
Energy levels and sub-levels
  • The main energy levels contain sub-levels
  • The different main energy levels have different
    sub-levels in them

There are four types s, p, d, f

5
Ionisation energies and group numbers
Successive ionisation energies for potassium
Potassium is in group 1 Notice the jump in
energy needed to remove the 2nd electron
6
Ionisation energies and group numbers
Successive ionisation energies for potassium
The different jumps are evidence for the
arrangement of electrons in energy levels and
sub-levels

Electronegativity
What is it?
  • Electronegativity is the power of an atom to
    attract electron density ?

in a covalent bond ?
Remember the definition look for where you
get the ticks!

Electronegativity
Paulings electronegativity scale
  • The higher the value, the more electronegative
    the element
  • Fluorine is the most electronegative element
  • It has an electronegativity value of 4.0
