Sedimentary Rocks
  • Are formed by weathering, erosion, transporting
    and depositing.
  • Weathering and erosion means that a rock or a
mineral is broken down from its original form
    (its appearance is altered).
  • Transporting and depositing means that is moved
from it original place, it travels. An example of
this is rocks and pebbles running downstream with
    the water current.

Metamorphic Rocks
  • These rocks were once sedimentary and igneous
    rocks.
  • They are formed from lots and lots of pressure
and heat (which is created from pressure).
  • Tend to look like they have layers.

Igneous Rocks
  • These rocks are formed above or below the ground.
  • Igneous rocks are formed below ground when the
melted rock (magma) deep within the earth becomes
trapped, it cools slowly to become a rock.
  • Igneous rocks are formed above ground when lava
(magma that erupts from a volcano) is cooled.

Test your Knowledge
  • A rock that is found by a riverbed and looks like
it is made up of a mixture of sediments (like
rocks and pebbles), is what type of rock?
  • Igneous
  • Metamorphic
  • Sedimentary
