2What is a polygon?
A polygon is a closed plane figure that is formed
by 3 or more segments called sides.
These are NOT considered polygons!
3Classifying Polygons
These ARE polygons!
Any 3 sided figure is called a TRIANGLE.
Any 5 sided shape is called a PENTAGON.
Any 6 sided shape is called a HEXAGON.
Any 4 sided figure is called a QUADRILATERAL.

Any 7 sided figure is called a HEPTAGON.
Any 8 sided figure is called an OCTAGON.
Any 9 sided shape is called a NONAGON.
5Regular Polygons
A regular polygon is a polygon with equal side
lengths and equal angle measures.
squares are always regular
regular hexagon
regular pentagon
These polygons are considered regular because all
sides and angles are equal.
6Diagonals
A diagonal of a polygon is a segment, other than
a side, that connects 2 vertices of a side.
