Principles
  • Each phonological phrase is a unit of connected
    speech that ends with a pause. Often in writing,
    pauses (points of juncture) are indicated by
    punctuation.
  • The word that receives primary stress will be
    semantically important.
  • All other content words receive secondary
    stress.

  • When /u/ occurs before another vowel, liquid or
    glide, it is often reduced to /U/ and when /U/
    occurs before a glide or liquid, it may reduce to
    /_at_/ /ju/, /jU/, or /j_at_/ or /tu/, /tU/, and /t_at_/
