Saturday - August 20 Category Three

• MDOTs internet website bandwidth was increased
  to accommodate increased internet traffic
• Contacted district analysts to shut down servers
  and check power supplies
• Hattiesburg, MS and McComb district offices are
  effected
• MDOT begins contra flow efforts on Highway 55
  from New Orleans to McComb
• MDOT begins contra flow efforts on Highway 49
  from Gulfport to Jackson

Sunday - August 21 Category Four

• Mandatory evacuation for the Gulf Coast
• Contra flow efforts continuing on highway 49 and
  highway 55
• District office maintenance crews put on alert

Monday - August 22, 2005 Category Four Gulf
Coast

• 800am landfall lost traffic cameras and all
  communication
• 1000am Katrina passes over Laurel, MS as
  category three Jackson employees sent home
• All equipment was shutdown in the Datacenter in
  Jackson
• 200pm Katrina passes over Jackson as a category
  two
• Central Mississippi lost electrical power, cell
  towers, and water

Tuesday August 23, 2005

• Emergency Center setup in the auditorium
• Emergency purchases of food, water, chainsaws,
  etc.
• Emergency supplies escorted to Hattiesburg
• Highway 49 cleared for emergency passage
• Satellite phones are the only communication from
  Central Mississippi to the Gulf Coast
• Datacenter equipment in Jackson is brought online
  Our Administration building is on an emergency
  power grid

Wednesday August 24, 2005

• Emergency purchasing and delivery continues
• Gas shortage begins in Jackson to the Gulf Coast
• 36 MDOT Offices are evaluated for recovery
• Transportation provided in Jackson for emergency
  I.S. employees
• Law Enforcement is setup at the Gulf Coast
  Project Office

Post Disaster Items

• Visit offices effected and report equipment and
  services damage
• Move exchange server to an online location
• Additional resources needed to answer phones
• Bring all equipment online as services become
  available

Lessons Learned

• Have spare network equipment and servers
• Have emergency gas reserves this has been
  installed at 2 district offices
• Administration buildings 10th floor has been
  developed into a command center
• Command centers in Hattiesburg and McComb
  district offices
• Portable trailers reside in Hattiesburg for MDOT
  personnel
• Additional satellite phones have been purchased
  for communication
• Evacuation booklets were created and disbursed
  throughout Mississippi
