Making Measurement Matter

Module Qualifications
  • This workshop seeks to present a broad overview
of a student tracking device developed at St
    Andrews Cathedral School, as follows
  • Primarily used with a pastoral/student welfare
    focus.
  • It allows senior members of staff to identify
individuals who are not coping or who need
    additional help.
  • The tool must be used with caution.
  • It provides a good overview of past and current
    performances.
  • It is further enhanced by the inclusion of an
    attitudinal summary, matching performance with
    attitude.

3
Develop Academic Tracking Module
  • Develop a simple tracking module that can be used
by all teaching staff to inform progress.
  • The module should be easy to modify, to allow
tracking schema to be tested and developed.
  • A successful trial can inform the functional
    specifications for a comprehensive academic
    database.

4
How it works
  • Student results and work habits are exported to
the academic tracking module written in Excel.
  • Marks are normalised and scaled by year group.
  • The module can then be distributed to all
teaching staff for review and to enhance report
    comments and recommendations.

5
Functionality
  • The module allows staff to review students by a
    number of groupings
  • By Year has been set up for Year Coordinators
  • By House is for the Heads of House
  • Academic allows easy review of academic
    scholars
  • Music groups students who have high extra
    curricular loads.

6
Reporting
  • Once a student has been selected, historical
    results are graphed.
  • At this stage, each report shows the normalised
marks for each semester against the top mark,
work habits are converted to a numerical value
and expressed as a percentage, and the student
rank is overlaid on the graph.
  • For year 7 10, marks for each subject are
aggregated and then scaled from the top mark.
  • For year 11 and 12 the calculation is more
    complicated with extension subjects and
weightings added to produce a composite total
    score.
