Making Outlines
  • There is so much information included in
    textbooks.
  • Outlining teaches you to arrange information in
    an organized way and quickly identify the main
    ideas and supporting details of a reading
    selection.

Directions Simple Outlining
  1. The lesson title will be the title of your
    outline.
  2. The headings/topics of a lesson are the headings
    of your outline and are designated by Roman
    numerals.
  3. The subheadings/subtopics of a lesson are the
    main ideas and are designated by capital letters.
  4. The supporting details within main ideas are
    designated by Arabic numerals.
  5. The subdetails within the supporting details are
    designated by lower case letters.

  1. There are always two or more headings supporting
    each subdivision
  2. Each subdivision is indented to show their
    relative importance
  3. You can outline in phrases and short sentences
  4. Sometimes minor headings dont need to be more
    than one word
  5. You can find many excellent examples of outlines
    in encyclopedias
