Title: Formaldehyde reduction with catalysts

1
Formaldehyde reduction with catalysts
  • PSO project 5230
  • Supported by Eltra and the Danish Gas companies

2
Agenda
  • Short overview of project
  • Current status
  • Economy
  • Near future plan
  • Points for discussion

3
Purpose I
  • Examine different catalyst ability for
    formaldehyde reduction
  • Collect and evaluate accessible knowledge on
    formaldehyde reduction with other methods
  • Conclude on Best Available Technology (BAT) for
formaldehyde reduction on gas engine plants

4
Purpose II
  • Examine the available catalyst for positive
    (reduction) effects on
  • Odor
  • Other aldehydes
  • CO
  • Methane and C2 hydrocarbons
  • Emission of lubrication oil

5
Project partners
  • Rolls-Royce (Ulstein Bergen) Tørring plant
  • Jenbacher Jetsmark (and Frederiks) plant
  • Pon Power (Caterpillar) Hjortebjerg plant
  • Wärtsilä
  • DGC

6
Follow group
  • Danish EPA
  • Suppliers and plant organizations (DFF and
    FDKV)
  • Eltra (Energinet.dk)Transmission and system
responsible for western DK electricity net
  • Gas companies Transmission and distribution
    companies

7
Status I
  • All three planned catalyst are installed and
approaching 2500 to 5000 hours of operation
  • Jenbacher supplies further data from their own
extra test at Frederiks to the project
  • Formaldehyde reductions of 50 for one type of
catalyst, 90 reduction for other type
  • Formaldehyde reduction seems to be stable or
decrease slightly over time of operation

8
Status II
  • One engine had a valve failure which caused oil
and water leakage into the exhaust system without
    effect on catalyst performance
  • Catalyst have large CO reduction and a small UHC
reduction. Other aldehydes and odor are reduced
    as well.
  • A draft report with collection of performance
data and economical data for competing technology
    has been completed.

9
Budget
  • Gas companies DDK 800.000,-
  • Eltra DDK 710.000,-
  • Consumption at end of 2004 was approximately
    55Man Hours DDK 617.000,-Equipment and
    analysis cost DDK 210.000,-
  • Project is on budget

10
Original time schedule
11
Accomplishment (in danish)
12
Near future
  • Finalize and print report on other methods for
    formaldehyde reduction
  • Continue to accumulate operating hours for
    catalysts
  • Emission measurements according to planed
    operation hours

13
For discussion today I
  • Do we expect that the formaldehyde reduction
efficiency is sensitive to inlet level?
  • Do we expect the catalysts to have lower
reduction efficiencies for formaldehyde when they
    are accumulating more operation hours?
  • What is the expected BAT for formaldehyde
reduction considering price and degree of
    reduction using catalysts?
  • Is this sufficient for the Danish EPA?
