• Students have a concept of word

WRITING

• Students write in syllables ex today to
  day
• Writing is slow because they write letter by
  letter.
• Volume begins with writing a few words and
  increases to a half a page or more by the end of
  this stage

SPELLING

• Spells using only the initial consonant sounds
• Spelling progresses to using the initial and
  final consonant sounds.
• Spellings continually progresses with students
  using vowels.

• Read materials that are matched appropriately to
  their instructional needs.
