1Airfield Ground Lighting
Overview
- Airfield Ground Lighting is a main concern for
Airport Authorities. The systems are required to
work under all conditions and even during power
outages. A backup supply with automatic switching
is therefore mandatory, with the crossover times
being variable dependent on the category of the
runway. - Surface Movement Guidance and Control Systems
(SMGCS) help speed up taxiing times and increase
airport throughput. AGL Systems therefore need to
meet certain criteria - Maintainability
- Reliability
- Ease Of Use
- Future Proof

Lighting Controls
- Schneider Electric play a major part in
automating Airfield Ground Lighting systems. Our
range of state of the art controllers, Man
Machine Interfaces and ancillary equipment is
essential when considering the automation and
control of the AGL. - Benefits of the system include
- Designed using State of the Art process control
equipment - Designed with inherent safety and redundancy in
mind from communications, power systems and hot
standby controls - Modular design and construction allow easy
adaptability and changes at low cost - Suitable for all sizes of airport dependent on
the Clients needs - Touch screen technology for ultimate flexibility
of operation - Fully Transparent ready solutions with in-built
web servers for comprehensive off site monitoring
and integration into the airport infrastructure

Lighting Controls
Schneider Electrics Control and Monitoring
scheme for AGL offers state of the art touch
screens and PLCs tailored to the individual
requirements of the installations. Airfield
layouts are electronically represented on a touch
screen allowing simple reconfiguring where
necessary. Modular PLCs allow increasing numbers
of I/O to be added when required. PLCs may be
simple Twido systems for the smaller sites to
complex Quantum PLCs with Advantys remote I/O for
the larger regional airports. All systems are
available as a Transparent Ready option allowing
simple web based monitoring of the AGL systems
via the airport IT infrastructure or as a stand
alone option. Systems are open architecture and
can be fully integrated with the airport BMS, EMS
and Electrical Network Monitoring schemes.

Small Airport Scheme
Momentum or Twido PLCs provide I/O and processing
power for control and monitoring of CCRs Simple
modular addition of more PLCs with standard
software as the system grows. Direct
communication via Modbus is possible with the
CCRs where fitted with appropriate
interfaces. Analogue inputs enable Primary
Circuit Current monitoring via CCR proportional
outputs or an interposing transducer.

Medium Airport Scheme
The PLCs are interface to two touch screen
displays, one of which acts as a mimic whilst the
other acts as control. Dual redundancy is
achieved by programming the system so that either
one of the touch screens can assume both control
and monitoring functions should one of them
fail. Other benefits include simultaneous
viewing of control and monitoring functions.
Quantum PLCs may be utilised on more
comprehensive schemes with correspondingly more
comlex touch screens.

Large Airport Scheme
Quantum PLCs offer increased functionality over
the smaller ranges. When used in conjunction with
Advantys distributed I/O a range of
communications protocols are also
available. Connection to touch screens, terminals
and a range of process control devices allow
enhanced traffic management and taxiway routing
systems to be tailored to the clients needs Hot
standby systems and dual redundant communications
via fibre optic or other means provide seamless
changeover in the event of a failure
