  • One of the group project tasks is to prepare and
    deliver a verbal presentation
  • This lecture explains what is required and gives
    some useful tips on

Background
  • The aim of the presentation is to
  • Allow you to give an overview of your project to
    staff and other students
  • Give you some useful experience in preparing and
    delivering a presentation
  • Teach you some of the tricks of the trade

Requirements
  • Each group prepares one presentation, which is
    usually delivered by one person, the best speaker
    in the group
  • Length 10 mins 5 mins for questions
  • Dress formal

Assessment
  • 10 of the final group project mark
  • The presentation is assessed, NOT the project
  • All group members receive the same mark

Presentation Sessions
  • Date Friday 6th May, 9.30am 330pm
  • Two venues (A1 and B53, to be confirmed, will
    email confirmation) with sessions running in
    parallel
  • Final schedule will be published 2 weeks before
    the presentation day

  • Each session
  • 1-1.5 hours, 4-6 talks per session
  • you MUST attend the whole of your session
  • Assessment
  • There will be 3 or 4 members of staff marking you

Content
  • The presentation should include
  • A description of the problem given
  • An overview of the application developed
  • Some reflective remarks on the project

  • NOTE
  • Dont cover every feature of your application,
    just the interesting and important ones
  • Avoid implementation details unless they are
    particularly interesting or novel
  • Live software demos are very risky

Visual Aids
  • The presentation should be given using
  • Microsoft Powerpoint
  • Prepare a backup, in the server, in a Floppy, a
    memory stick or a CD, etc., just in case

Preparing a Presentation
  • Aim it at the target audience!
  • Here is a simple structure for preparing a
    presentation
  • Brainstorm the content of the talk
  • Select the material to be used
  • Order the material properly
  • Draft slides on paper
  • Revise drafts many times
  • Prepare the actual slides
  • NOTE
  • For a 10 minute talk, prepare about 5-8 slides

Talking Well
  • Some tips for delivering a professional and
    entertaining presentation
  • Point at the screen, not the slide
  • Dont reveal slides line at a time
  • Dont read from a prepared script
  • Talk slowly and clearly
  • Use simple language and short sentences
  • Make eye contact with the audience
  • Vary the tone of your voice
  • Be enthusiastic and confident

Handling Nerves
  • Some tips for handling nerves when delivering a
    presentation
  • (Familiarise yourself with the room and the
    equipment before the talk)
  • Memorise your first few sentences
  • Carefully plan your introduction to each slide
  • Write out a complete transcript, but dont look
    at it during the talk
  • Practice the talk a few times

Open Day - Equipment
  • You will be provided with
  • an area in A32 where you can set up your stand
  • one or more machines to use in A32
  • OR a welcome desk machine in A32 from which you
    can guide interested parties up to the project
    lab for a demonstration
  • TSG will email you regarding requesting equipment
    for the Open Day

  • Marking
  • members of staff will circulate and mark stands
  • stands will be marked on their overall quality
    and professionalism
  • the open day counts for 10 of your overall mark
  • Dress is formal
