    responsibilities of the athletic coach

Bloodborne Pathogens
  • Microorganisms such as viruses or bacteria that
    are carried in blood and cause diseases
  • Many different BBP
  • Hepatitis B (HBV)
  • Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
  • (OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standard)

Hepatitis B
  • More easily transmitted than HIV or other forms
    of Hepatitis
  • Can lead to serious liver cirrhosis or cancer
  • Can live in dried blood on inanimate objects one
    week
  • Prevention Get Vaccinated!! Vaccination
    required to come to school now but some athletes
    still may not be vaccinated

HIV
  • Attacks the immune system and ability to fight
    off infections
  • May not progress to AIDS for many years
  • Can be carried by person who appears healthy
  • Virus does not survive long in dried blood
  • No Vaccination

How do you become infected?
  • To become infected , the body fluids from
    infected people have to get inside you and your
    bloodstream
  • Need to be exposed to a large enough amount to
    overcome your immune system
  • You do not automatically get infected if exposed
    to blood or body fluids

Risks in Coaching Setting
  • Extremely LOW when guidelines followed

How to protect yourself
  • Standard Precautions
  • Consider all body fluids and blood potentially
    hazardous
  • PPE personal protective equipment
  • (gloves, gown, mask, goggles)
  • If ever have an exposure tell your immediate
    supervisor - Athletic Director in the appropriate
    building

Handwashing
  • Handwashing - most important and easiest practice
    used to prevent transmission of BBP
  • Wash hands or other exposed skin thoroughly
    ASAP following exposure incident
  • Wash hands washed immediately after removal of
    all PPE

Good Housekeeping Rules
  • Clean and decontaminate surfaces as soon as
    possible
  • Clean carefully using disinfectant and disposable
    towels to soak up blood
  • Follow instructions in med kit
  • Put contaminated waste in sealed leak-proof
    biohazards bag
