What is karate?
  • An ancient form of self defence without using
    weapons.
  • The word Karate is formed from the Japanese words
Kara meaning empty, and Te meaning hand -
    empty hand.
  • Hands and feet are used for kicking, punching and
    blocking.

3
How it began.
  • Karate dates back 1000 yrs, probably from Chinese
    fighting Kempo.
  • Kempo reached an island situated between Japan
    and Taiwan, called Okinawa.
  • Weapons on the island were banned by the Kings in
1470 and again in 1609 to prevent an uprising
    from the islands people.
  • The islands people developed a fighting style
    without using weapons.
