2
Objectives
  • Design a system that sorts 4 types of balls
(0.375) and 4 hex nuts (0.250) made of
different materials but have the same dimensions.
  • The sorter must be efficient and inexpensive
  • Automated Feeding System
  • System weight less than 50 lb
  • Total budget is 100

3
Nuts Materials
  • 4 materials Properties of interest for hex nuts

Balls Materials
  • 4 materials Properties of interest

5
Conceptual Design
We utilize the following properties 1. Weight to
sort the balls 2. Density to sort the aluminum
and nylon hex nuts 3. Weight to sort the brass
hex nuts 4. Magnetism to sort the stainless steel
hex nuts
6
Conceptual Design
  • Procedure
  • First put the balls and hex nuts into a funnel
which has an agitator connected to it.
  • Once in the funnel, the balls or nuts are
dispersed one at a time using a disc which is
    powered by a motor.

7
  • Procedure continued
  • 4. The object falls through the whole in the disc
onto a conveyor belt which is on an incline, the
balls roll backwards into their sorter and the
nuts are carried to their sorter on the conveyor.
  • The conveyor is powered by a stepper motor
  • 5. Simultaneously the balls and hex nuts are
    sorted in their individual sorters

8
Conceptual Design
  • Sub-Procedure Balls
  • We first separate the acrylic balls.
  • Then we separate the .
  • Alternatively, you can use a flow chart to
    describe this

9
Conceptual Design
  • Sub-Procedure Hex nuts
  • We first separate the hex nuts and the balls by
using a conveyor that is tilted on an angle so
that the balls roll to one side.
  • Simultaneously the balls and hex nuts go through
    their own sorting procedure.
  • Alternatively, you can use a flow chart to
    describe this
