4Gods IntentionMans Image
- Genesis 126-27
- Who did God use as a model when He created man?
- 26And God said, Let us make man in our image,
after our likeness and let them have dominion
over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of
the air, and over the cattle, and over all the
earth, and over every creeping thing that
creepeth upon the earth. - 27So God created man in his own image, in the
image of God created he him male and female
created he them. -
- Does this make mankind special? Why?
5Some Statistics
- Acording to the U.S. census bureau in 2008 there
were 21,469,780 teenagers in America between the
ages of fifteen and nineteen. Teens are exposed
to an estimated 3,000 ads a day. (Adbusters) - 65 of U.S. teens have TV sets in their own
rooms. (Kaiser Family Foundation) - 83 of U.S. teens reported going online last
year. (Teen Research Unlimited) - In 2000, U.S. teens spent an estimated 105
billion and influenced their parents to spend an
additional 48 billion. (Teen Research Unlimited)
- In 1998, U.S. companies spent nearly 200 billion
on advertising. Worldwide ad spending is
estimated at 435 billion. (Advertising Age and
the United Nations Human Development Report,
cited in Klein)
6Generation Y (Echo boomers)(1981-85)
(1995-2001)
- Demographically
- The term echo boom (used in reference to Gen Y)
refers to a five year span between 1989 and 1994
when for the first time since 1964, the number of
live births in the US reached over four million.
Previously, even the rate of 1965 (3.76 million)
was not reached until 1985. Also, the birthrate
of 1971 (3.56 million) has yet to be reached
according to the 2000 US census. If the years
19832000 are used, as is common in market
research, then the size of Generation Y in the
United States is approximately 76 million. - Sociographically
- Facebook, MySpace, SMS and other instant
communication technologies may explain Generation
Y's reputation for being peer oriented and for
seeking instant gratification. Generation Y, like
other generations, is shaped by the events,
leaders, developments and trends of its time.

9Social Networking on Line
One of the more popular ways for teens (and
increasingly adults) to communicate is through
social networking Web sites.
10Facebook
- Started as a tool at Harvard by Mark Zuckerberg
to help students connect and collaborate. - On Sept 11 2006 it opened it's doors to all
internet users. - In June 2007 there were 25 million users, 4
million new users in a month and 30m page views
in a month. - 1 of all the time on the internet is on Facebook
- Growing 3 x faster than MySpace
- The website has 31 Million active users
- More than 100,000 new registrations per day
since Jan. 2007 - An average of 3 percent weekly growth since Jan.
2007 - Active users have doubled since Facebook
expanded registration in Sept. 2006 - The site receives over 15 billion page views per
month - It currently hosts over 1.7 Billion photos
11MySpace
- One of the top ten Internet sites.
- Second most popular English-language SN Web site
with just over seventy-nine million registered
accounts. - Teens share interests and hobbies, post photos
and videos, post blogs and bulletins, and share
messages and comments. - A way to meet people, share things about
themselves, and communicate with friends. - Can be a target for on-line predators.
- Their page is their "personality and can get
them recognized. - Once you find one person, you learn who their
friends are, read what people say about them,
learn what they do in their free time, read their
"blogs" (express their innermost feelings), and
learn their likes, dislikes, heroes, and even
their monthly schedules. - For teens who are going through the stage where
they are constantly looking for affirmation and
validation and a response everything they are,
it's addictive
12Making the Connection

16Power of the Mind
Genesis 11 1And the whole earth was of one
language, and of one speech. 4And they said, Go
to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top
may reach unto heaven and let us make us a name,
lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the
whole earth. 6And the LORD said, Behold, the
people is one, and they have all one language
and this they begin to do and now nothing will
be restrained from them, which they have imagined
to do.
17Man Controls His Mind
- Romans 12
- 2And be not conformed to this world but be ye
transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye
may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and
perfect, will of God. - 3For I say, through the grace given unto me, to
every man that is among you, not to think of
himself more highly than he ought to think but
to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to
every man the measure of faith.
18We are in a battle for the minds of men!
- For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war
according to the flesh. For the weapons of our
warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for
pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments
and every high thing that exalts itself against
the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into
captivity to the obedience of Christ (2
Corinthians 103-5) - Our weapons are mighty in God. They are powerless
in and of themselves, but in God they are mighty,
powerful and able to bring those thoughts under
control and to break down the mightiest
strongholds. These weapons include the Word of
God (Ephesians 617), prayer (Ephesians 618) and
the anointing of the Holy Spirit (Acts 18).
19The Challenge for the Christian Educator
- Is the church out of touch?
- Is there a gap between the established church,
its teaching and the next generation(s)? - If yes, how does Christian Education bridge the
gap? - How would Jesus, the Master Teacher reach the
next generation?
20Help Your Student Learn Biblical Mind Training
Philippians 4 7And the peace of God, which
passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts
and minds through Christ Jesus. 8Finally,
brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever
things are honest, whatsoever things are just,
whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are
lovely, whatsoever things are of good report if
there be any virtue, and if there be any praise,
think on these things. 9Those things, which ye
have both learned, and received, and heard, and
seen in me, do and the God of peace shall be
with you. (emphasis added)

and its meaning for him/her - Invite feedback by providing a safe atmosphere
for the student to give personal insight
26Questions Jesus Asked
Matt 513Ye are the salt of the earth but if the
salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be
salted? 46For if ye love them which love you,
what reward have ye? do not even the publicans
the same? 47And if ye salute your brethren only,
what do ye more than others? do not even the
publicans so? Matt 625Therefore I say unto you,
Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat,
or what ye shall drink nor yet for your body,
what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than
meat, and the body than raiment? 26Behold the
fowls of the air for they sow not, neither do
they reap, nor gather into barns yet your
heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much
better than they? 27Which of you by taking
thought can add one cubit unto his
stature? 30Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass
of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is
cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe
you, O ye of little faith?
27Questions Jesus Asked
31Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall
we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal
shall we be clothed? Matt 73And why beholdest
thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but
considerest not the beam that is in thine own
eye? 4Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let
me pull out the mote out of thine eye and,
behold, a beam is in thine own eye? 9Or what man
is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will
he give him a stone? 10Or if he ask a fish, will
he give him a serpent? 11If ye then, being evil,
know how to give good gifts unto your children,
how much more shall your Father which is in
heaven give good things to them that ask
him? 16Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men
gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
28Communicate Build Relationship with Students
- A key component in communication is listening to
the answers to questions - If active listening provides teaching cues for
the teacher, what does it do for the student? - Social networks are a WAY TO LISTEN!
- Remove communication barriers by avoiding
condemnatory language or making subjects taboo - Dont make judgments about the SN tooluse it to
learn about your students become a friend (not
an equal but a friend)
29Communicate Build Relationship with Students
- Dont be afraid to go where the student
isliterally and figuratively - Study the studentlearn his/her culture
- Learn to text/instant message (MMS/SMS/IM)
- Set up your own blog, Facebook or MySpace page to
IM your youth students - Spend TIME with students and give each your FULL
ATTENTION
30Next Steps
31Application, Application, Application
- What new awareness did you gain today?
- What (if anything) will change your
teaching/reaching style? - Choose and describe one student on whom you will
focus. Write down what your approach will be.
Report to the group.
