8
Review Criteria
  • Does the organization have a thoughtful strategy
for strengthening a particular capacity? Is the
    plan timely?
  • Is there a good fit between the HACBED-developed
    organizational assessment and this capacity
    building project?
  • Is the project likely to build sustainable
capacity within the organization? Is the
organization likely to be in a better position to
deliver more effective services when the project
    is completed?

9
Review Criteria (Continued)
  • Is there demonstrated leadership and solid
commitment from the governing body of the
    organization?
  • Are the people involved in the capacity building
project knowledgeable and likely to contribute to
    its success?

10
Review Criteria (Continued)
  • Does the organization have a plan for determining
whether their capacity building project made a
    difference in their service delivery?
  • Does the work plan make sense? Are tasks
    sufficiently thought through?

11
Review Criteria (Continued)
  • Does the budget align with the work plan? Are
    costs allowable and reasonable?
  • If you have received HCF funds previously, are
    your final reports current?

12
Size of Grants
  • Maximum grant amount is 30,000 per organization
  • Total amount available for grantmaking is
    484,007
  • For non-501(c)(3) organizations, HCF may consider
grant requests for up to 5,000.
  • (For requests more than 5,000, please contact
    us)

13
Request Narrative 1
  • 1 Provide a brief description of your
    organization. Describe the current service
project or program of the organization. What
does the organization hope to achieve in your
    community?
  • What do you do and why?
  • Who do you serve and how are they helped by your
    program?

14
Narrative 1 Example
  • Our organization, located in Kapaa, has over
200 members and has been in existence for 15
years. We provide meals twice a week to the
homeless at the beach park. We hope to make a
difference in the lives of these people and help
them get back on their feet.

15
Narrative- 2
  • 2 Describe the capacity building project for
which you are requesting support. How do you
expect this project will build (a) organizational
    capacity and/or (b) service capacity?
  • How do you think you can get better (more
efficient, expand, etc.) at what you do?
  • What specifically do you need funding for at this
    time to get there?
  • RC 1 Does the organization have a thoughtful
    strategy for strengthening a particular
    strategy?
  • RC 3 Is the project likely to build sustainable
capacity within the organization? Is the
organization likely to be in a better position
to deliver more effective services when the
    project is completed?

16
Narrative 2 Example
  • We would like to purchase a computer and a
software program that will allow us to develop a
database to better track our food inventory and
    track volunteers at our kitchen
  • This will

Improve our organizational capacity by allowing
us to make sure we have volunteers trained and
scheduled to work when we need them. Allow us to
begin to develop our volunteers as donors and
track their giving. Improve our service capacity
because we will be able to purchase food in a
more timely manner and avoid waste.
17
Small Group Practice
  • Select a capacity building project idea from the
    handout list
  • Discuss the project idea in your group
  • Try to answer these questions
  • How will this project build org. capacity?
  • How will this project build or make better
    service or program capacity?
  • Round robin report out to the large group

18
Narrative 3
  • 3 How does this project fit into the overall
social ministry or mission of the organization?
  • Is the project core to the organization?
  • Is this a part of a larger strategy?
  • RC 2 Is there a good fit between the capacity
building strategy and where the organization
wants to go in the future?

19
Narrative 3 Example
  • Our organization clearly feels that part of our
ministry is serving those less fortunate.
  • As part of a retreat in 2001, the Social Ministry
Council decided that the homeless are a part of
our community and providing for their needs is
    one of our goals.
  • While our minister is very supportive of this
program, most of the actual work will be done by
the volunteer head of Social Ministry.

20
Narrative 4
  • 4 How will the organizations leadership and/or
governing body be involved in tracking this
    project?
  • At what level is the organization committed to
    this project?
  • How will key leadership know what is going on?
  • RC 4 Is there demonstrated leadership and solid
commitment from the governing body of the
    organization?

21
Narrative 4 Example
  • The head of social ministry/program director
meets with the minister every month to keep her
informed about the progress of the program.
  • The Social Ministry has committed 2,000 each
month for purchasing the food for this program.
  • A Board committee has been established to help
develop the scope of work and interview the
    technology consultant.

22
Narrative 5
  • RC 5 List the people that will be involved in
    the implementation of the project.

23
Narrative 5 Example
24
Narrative 6
  • 6 We are interested in how you will measure the
success of this capacity building project. By
the February, what would be different about your
organization if you accomplished your workplan?
  • Describe the specific changes that can reasonably
be expected to occur by February?
  • RC 7 Does the workplan make sense? Are tasks
    sufficiently thought through?
  • RC 1 Is the plan timely?

25
Narrative 6 Example
  • We will have a computer system and software
established to track all aspects of our food
programs (food inventory, volunteers, numbers of
    homeless served/meals served, locations)?
  • Staff or volunteers will be trained in inputting
    the data.
  • We will be positioned to begin to track this
    information in 2007?
