2. Research Proposal
  • Goals of the project
  • Explorative analysis of the potential of the data
from the HIS 2004 concerning the 65
  • Formulation of concrete proposals for further
    research

10
Research proposal
  • Goal one 3 tasks
  • (1) Exploration of potential of the data from HIS
2004 for constructing set of health indicators

11
Research proposal
  • Goal one 3 tasks
  • (2) Exploration of possibilities for analysing
the data from the HIS 2004
  • Screening of surveys of the elderly in other
    European countries
  • Focus group meetings with representatives from
policy, practice and the research community
  • Identifying research needs

12
Research proposal
  • Goal one 3 tasks
  • (3) Exploration of potential of the HIS 2004 as a
source of information for the planning of elderly
    care

13
Research proposal
  • 5 analysis topics Introduction
  • Each of these topics shall be further elucidated
    in terms of content
  • - theoretical perspective, problem definition
  • - methodology
  • One project selected as a pilot scheme

14
Research proposal
  • 5 analysis topics first topic
  • Analysis of clustering of symptoms suggestive of
    certain syndromes (frailty, depression) and
identification of risk factors for use of health
    care provisions

15
Research proposal
  • 5 analysis topics second topic
  • Analysis of the effect of social and economic
characteristics on the use of health care
    provisions by the elderly

16
Research proposal
  • 5 analysis topics third topic

4. International Seminar
  • 1. In identifying trends, what are disadvantages
of working with cross-sectional data instead of
    longitudinal data?
  • Cross sectional data
  • Subsequent cross-sections are very useful
  • Prevalence and trends in health behaviours
  • Insuitable for explanations of changes
  • Hard to infer cause and effect
  • No good idea of transitions (what has happened
    before institutionalisation?)
  • Problem of different sampling frames (with or
    without institutionalised elderly)

26
International Seminar
  • 1. In identifying trends, what are disadvantages
of working with cross-sectional data instead of
    longitudinal data?
  • Longitudinal data
  • You see process, what has happened before
  • Ex possible to tie changes in smoking to changes
    in disease

27
International Seminar
  • 2. What is the limitation of using general
    surveys?
  • General surveys ok if sample is large
  • Some questions need the use of specific samples
    in specific area

28
International Seminar
  • 3. How to connect survey data and administrative
    data?
  • Tying survey data to administrative data
  • Ex. using data from Geographic Information
Systems to answer the question why physical
activity is low in urban environments, you can
look at the presence of parks
  • Registry data postal code availability of
    services, parks, SES of neighbourhood

29
International Seminar
  • 4. Implications research project
  • The idea of longitudinal survey is not under
    discussion with commissioners
  • Purpose of the current project is to work with
existing data, but we are asked to make
    suggestions for the future

30
International Seminar
  • 5. Can we check data of the HIS with the data of
    SHARE?
  • We will be measuring different things (grip
strength is perhaps less important for daily
    activities)
  • You need other things ex. walking ability

31
International Seminar
  • 6. Determinants of institutionalisations why
    people end up in institutions?
  • Important variables ADL disability, household
    situations (partner)
  • Most important variable cognitive impairment
  • Cognitive impairment not in HIS!

32
International Seminar
  • Implications for the research team
  • Work with what exists data are not longitudinal
  • Feedback on data from international colleagues
(we have sent the questionnaires to international
    colleagues)
  • Feedback from the steering committee
