1
Zero Waste UH Paper Auditing
  • Tamara Armstrong
  • UHM Landscaping, Sustainable Saunders,
    Environmental Studies

2
U.S. Paper Behavior
  • U.S. per capita consumption of paper is over 748
lbs- the highest in the world!
  • Paper constitutes 34 of our trash.

3
Costs of Paper Production
  • Paper Mills
  • 2nd largest polluting industry
  • 5th largest industrial consumer of energy
  • Largest consumers of forests

4
UHM Paper Recycling
5
Mixed Paper Cost/Profit Scenarios
6
Untapped Potential
  • Paper constitutes 34 of trash
  • If UHM pays 160,000 per year in tipping fees,
  • then UHM pays 54,400 per year for dumping paper.
  • The largest cost avoidance of going from dumping
    to recycling paper was 5,102.84.
  • So, only 9 of paper recycling potential is
    tapped.

7
Untapped Potential
  • Tapping 9 avoids 5,102.84 in tipping fees
  • and could generate 7,992.00 in revenue,
  • thats 13,094.00 in UHMs
    pocket!
  • So, 100 recycling would create potential annual
  • 145, 488.89
  • In UHMs pocket!

8
Problem Lack of Funding Data
  • UHMs current waste management system is
    haphazard and inefficient.
  • We are in need of a new truck and bins to
    ramp-up our recycling capacity.

9
Zero Waste UH Vision
  • Recycling centers throughout campus in strategic
    locations with regular pick-up.
  • Increase overall recycling rates to our full
    potential.
  • Purchase a paper baler and sell our paper
commodities directly to the international market.

10
Goal Paper Baler6,000-12,000
11
UH in the Business of Recycling
  • 145, 488.89 per year in the pocket of UH
  • Its good for the environment saves trees, and
keeping tonnage out of the landfill.
  • A positive, high profile program for UH
  • Fiscal officers enaged in the campus
    sustainability movement

12
Paper Purchase Auditing
13
Paper Purchase Auditing
  • 1) Link to a Google spreadsheet for update by
fiscal offices as paper is purchased.
  • (Distribution of friendly reminder cards for
postage on computer monitors and office walls.)
  • Or
  • 2) Possible creation of a paper subcode for Zero
Waste UH Coordinator to update monthly.
