Title: Traffic Control System

1
Traffic Control System
  • An efficient and cleaner way to regulate traffic

2
  • Aim Of The Project
  • To construct a cleaner and more time efficient
    traffic system.
  • To minimize the time delays at traffic signals.
  • To provide a less dense route to the customers on
    their request.
  • To help reduce fuel consumption.
  • To help reduce air and sound pollution.

3
  • Parts Of The Project
  • A Central Unit that will maintain real time data
of the traffic density, operate the traffic
signals and also serve as the other end of Path
    Tracking Unit
  • 2) A Communicator Unit installed on every
vehicle that will give certain information to
    Central Unit
  • 3) Traffic signals which are operated
depending upon the current state of the traffic
  • 4) A Path Tracking Unit which shall give the
customer an available, short and clear route

4
  • The Communicator Unit
  • This unit shall contain an antenna, modulator,
demodulator, speaker, microphone and a processor.
  • It shall transmit some data to the Central Unit.
This data shall contain the type, registration
no. of the vehicle and the speed of the vehicle.
It is coupled with the speedometer for this
    purpose.
  • It shall also have a provision for sending and
receiving data regarding Path Tracking Unit. (
    This facility is optional)
  • In short, this device will be attached to the
vehicle. The functioning will be on similar
lines to that of a mobile phone device. On
commercial scale, the production cost will be
equivalent to that of low end cell phone

5
  • Collection of Data
  • The data sent by the Communicator Units shall be
collected through Signal Towers of cell phone
service providers to the Central Unit.
  • Techniques
  • The position of a vehicle can be tracked down
using the signal transmitted by the Communicator
Unit installed in the vehicle. This can Be done
using the Triangulation Concept. The following
    technique implements this concept
  • Uplink Time Difference of Arrival (U-TDOA)

  • Central Unit
  • This is a vital Unit having the following parts
  • Traffic Density Data Analyzer This part
compares the traffic density along various roads
accordingly processes the data and feeds it to
the Traffic Signal Controller. Simultaneously, it
analysis the data on-demand for path tracking
    system.
  • Traffic Signal Controller This determines the
time durations of the traffic signals and trips
    them accordingly.
  • IVRS Setup This contains verbal database of all
the landmarks, places of a city. The voice input
of the customer is compared to existing places in
the database the best route for the customer is
obtained from the path Tracking Unit is
provided in terms of the landmarks, names of the
roads in the path. This is transmitted to the
    customer.
  • Path Tracking Unit This unit shall find a short
less dense route for the customer on his
demand. The traffic density available routes to
the customer are compared and a short route is
decided is sent to IVRS Setup.

  • ANALYSIS
  • Cost Analysis
  • The scaled down version would require the
development of the Communicator Units, The
Central Unit, Model of a part of city, some
    minor components.
  • Each communicator unit would cost around 1500 Rs.
On real scale, due to mass production, itll
    become cheaper.
  • For central unit, the hardware required would
correspond to a computer for a modelled version,
    and an IVR system.
  • A cardboard model of a part of city with enough
complexity will be constructed to test the system
    using remote controlled toy cars.
  • Models of antenna towers and traffic signal.

8
  • Timeline
  • The project shall be done in following sequence
  • The Communicator Unit signal transmissions
(data collection) is dealt first, since they are
interlinked. We estimate that the Communicator
Unit will take 2 months for completion.
  • The setting up of the Central Unit consists of
programming , developing database of IVRS. The
traffic signals will be set up simultaneously.
The time taken for this will depend upon the
complexity ( scale) of the system and the
programming. We estimate that the programming
of the Central Unit will take 2-3 months.

9
Necessity of the Project
  • So much attention is paid nowadays on traffic
    management.
  • Improperly planned roads traffic system.
  • Avoiding Traffic Jams.
  • Certain features of the Communicator Unit can be
    used for other purposes (Universality).
  • Reduction of pollution.
