Traffic is one of the major problems in all
developing countries. As development is being
done and the economy is pumped with money, the
number of vehicle owners is skyrocketing. Its
getting difficult for authorities to manage
traffic in spite of thumping efforts of
government.

Intelligent Traffic Management System
Government is trying its best to ensure swift
movement of traffic on roads by constructing
wider roads, flyovers, underpasses and
expressways etc. But, giving wider roads to the
burgeoning number of vehicles is not enough. You
must ensure safety on roads along with traffic
management and it can better be achieved by
Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS).

Data Collection
Varied hardware devices are installed to collect
data from different sources. This hardware
includes automatic vehicle identifiers, sensors,
camera, and GPS based automatic vehicle locators
etc. The received data such as traffic count,
travel speed, vehicle weight, surveillance, and
delays etc. is forwarded to the master
controller.

Data transmission
Rapid and real-time information is collected and
forwarded to the users. The information is
analysed and used to make traffic related
announcements to the travellers through the
internet, SMS, or on-board units of the vehicle.

Data analysis
The massive amount of data collected is then
processed in few steps such as error
rectification, data synthesis, data cleaning, and
adaptive logical analysis. This data is also used
to predict the traffic scenario in future.

Traveller Information
Necessary information is provided to the
traveller using the intelligent traffic
management system. Real-time information such as
travel time, change in route, work zone
conditions, and diversions are provided to the
traveller to ensure that he has a safe journey.
These messages can be provided through variable
message signs, highway advisory radio, SMS, and
internet etc.
