3
Queen Bee
  • The queen is the only bee in the hive that can
    lay eggs.
  • The queen can lay up to 1000 eggs a day.
  • That is all she does in the spring and summer.
  • A queen can live up to five years.

4
Worker Bee
  • Workers bees are all females.
  • Workers can not lay eggs.
  • They do all the work in the colony, including
feeding the young, gathering food, building the
honeycomb cells and guarding the colony.
  • They live only 6 weeks.

5
The Drone Bee
  • Drone bees are all males.
  • They have only one job and that is to mate with
    the queen.
  • They live only 8 weeks.

6
Bees have three body parts
7
The Head
  • A bee has two big eyes, one on each side of the
    head.
  • It has three more eyes-small ones- on top of the
    head.
  • Bees see all the colors we see except red.
  • They have two feelers on the top of their heads
    called antennae.

8
The Thorax
  • Bees have two pair of wings located on the
    thorax.
  • All the legs are located on the thorax.

9
The Abdomen
  • The abdomen is composed of nine segments.
  • The wax glands are located in the abdomen.
  • The sting is contained in a pocket at the end of
    the abdomen in adult females.

10
The Hive
  • It is made of thousands of tiny rooms.
  • Each cell has six sides.
  • Honey is stored in some cells.
  • Other cells are nurseries.

11
The Nursery
  • The queen lays the egg.
  • It takes three days to hatch.
  • Out crawls a tiny wormlike creature known as a
    larva.
  • Worker bees feed the larva royal jelly for three
days. The larva spins a silk cocoon.
  • Inside the cocoon the larva becomes a pupa.
  • It takes three weeks to become a fully grown
    worker bee.

Bee Communication
  • The bee performs a dance to where the food is
    at.
  • The dance helps the bees find food faster.
  • The dance tells bees that food is close or far
away or which way to fly.
