Title: HIECS and Higher Education Institutions

1
HIECS and Higher Education Institutions
  • Helen Langton
  • Dean, Faculty of Education Health and Sciences
  • University of Derby

2
Key interests
  • How a HIEC might work with universities
especially around non-medical education with the
goal of achieving a multi-professional dimension
  • Innovation in education
  • Link between CLAHRC and HIEC

3
Key understanding
  • Primary purpose to expedite the transfer of
innovative practices and procedures across health
    care economies
  • Clear recognition that innovation transfer must
be supported by education and training which must
itself be fully aligned with innovation
  • Not constrained by professional boundaries

4
Multi and Inter Professional ways of working
  • Best implemented in fully functional
    inter-professional teams
  • Call for this as a focus for HIEC in the East
    Midlands

5
Already happening in the East Midlands
  • Expertise in developing innovation in education
as evidenced in the work with the NHSIII
developing embedding of innovations in service
    improvement in undergraduate curriculum at
University of Derby and now being taken up by
    Universities of Northampton and Nottingham
  • Exemplars of cross sector working e.g. Derby
    Practice Learning partnership

6
Commissioner provider split for post graduate
medical education
  • Post Graduate Medical Education policy issues
    keep separate from HIECs
  • Current model for nursing, midwifery and allied
    health professions is split
  • Partnerships in HIECs could make this more
effective and focussed around the innovation
    agenda

7
Key issues
  • Virtual or physical?
  • How many?
  • What if we do not have one (or two)?
  • How is each university to be represented?

8
Conclusion
  • Keen to all be involved
  • Multi and inter-professional in nature
  • Build on current strengths and work
  • Partnership working
