5
The shortcomings of traditional Ethernet
  • Initially intended for LAN usage
  • Lack of OAM (Operations, Administration and
    Maintenance)
  • Lack of Performance Monitoring Capabilities
  • Lack of SLA Assurance Capabilities
  • No clear demarcation points between the Carrier
    and the End customer
  • No loop-back capabilities
  • Little or no testability of the carrier circuit
  • No fault isolation features
  • Consequence
  • Though Telecommunication Service Providers are
faced with overwhelming customer demand for
Ethernet Services, theyre confronted with the
operational shortcomings of Ethernet which was
not initially designed for Carrier Networks.
  • The CAPEX savings of Ethernet are quickly
    washed-out by increased OPEX

6
Accedians solutions Raison dêtre
  • Despite customer demand and Competitive Pressure,
certain Carriers hold-back the conversion rate of
    T1-Frame-Relay customers to Ethernet Private
    Line, because of operational shortcomings.
  • The Accedian EtherNID is seen as an ENABLER and
ACCELERATOR for the deployment of new revenue
    generating Ethernet Services (VOIP, E-Line,
    E-LAN, etc.).

  • Ethernet media is often extended for substantial
lengths between the Access Point and the customer
    IT closet.
  • Loss of all OAM ability as soon as coming out of
    the transport network.
  • No clear demarcation point between the carrier
    and the customer.
