Dublin Core Metadata Initiative
  • The Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI) is an

    widespread adoption of interoperable metadata
    standards and developing specialized metadata
vocabularies for describing resources that enable
    more intelligent information discovery systems.

4
Dublin Core Qualifiers
  • Dublin Core Qualifiers are used for the
qualification of Dublin Core Metadata Elements
    (DCMES).
  • These were identified by element specific working
    groups of DCMI.
  • These were judged by the DCMI Usage Committee.

5
Dumb-Down Principle
  • The guiding principle for the identification of
qualifiers is known as the Dumb-Down Principle.
  • It states that a client should be able to ignore
any qualifier and use the description as if it
    were unqualified.

6
Classes of Qualifiers
  • Element Refinement
  • These qualifiers make the meaning of an element
narrower or more specific. A refined element
shares the meaning of the unqualified element but
    with a more restricted scope.
  • Eg Core element Title
  • Element Refinement Alternative

7
Classes of Qualifiers
  • Encoding Scheme
  • These qualifiers identify schemes that aid in
the interpretation of an element value. These
    include controlled vocabularies and formal
    notations.
  • Eg Core element Subject
  • Encoding Scheme MeSH, DDC etc
