Title: EDE Enterprise Desktop Education

1
EDEEnterprise Desktop Education
  • Our goal
  • Enable your users to perform a business task
    correctly as quickly as possible.
  • Research shows that up to 80 of new applications
for business processes that fail, do so because
    of inadequate end-user training.

Bruno van der Vaerenbvdv_at_fern.bewww.fern.be

Fern
  • 15 year learning experience
  • E-learning SW specialist
  • We work with partners who know the customer

3
The scope
  • You have to train people in several domains
  • Product and business knowledge
  • Implement a change in procedures
  • a new SW implementation or upgrade
  • SAP , Powerbuilder , Siebel, MSOutlook, TFM, Web
( .net, ASP ), VB, Java, Peoplesoft, AS-400,
    S/390, emulations(3270 5250), or other in-House
    App.
  • You have people in many different locations
  • Each one needs a different part of the knowledge
  • They are often changes. People have to be kept up
    to date.
  • You have to increase the quality of the work done
  • Data input
  • Action plans
  • Business decisions

Why use e-learning
EDE provides a long term training and support
solution
  • Loss of training expertise when trainers move
    onto other sites
  • Loss of training capacity when classrooms are
    disbanded after go-live
  • Loss of training systems and data
  • Staff turnover
  • User Practice
  • System Upgrades
  • Roll-out of additional features

6
Study by Kathy Chen-Wright Ph.D.
Watching demos
  • The results of this study show no statistical
    significance between the groups watching
  • demonstrations before practicing and the groups
    practicing without watching demonstrations

Assima
  • Assimas Wizard Training Suite is a productivity
tool for creating realistic software simulations
    and tutorials.
  • About 10 times quicker than any screenshot based
    tool.
  • You generate a transactional documentation with
    one mouse click
  • Courses and documentations are automatically
    translated.
  • You can automatically generate a index for all
courses, providing direct access on learning
content for trainees and users (in production).
  • You will see that students learn much better and
quicker on a real object based, interactive
    simulation
  • This system is about 10 times quicker to keep up
to date for changes in the application SW.

Assima Overview
9
Development Stage 1
  • Captures all data relating to a transaction
    within the target application. Including
  • Static objects as well as dynamic action
    information
  • Radio Buttons, Menus, Drop-down Menu
  • Data input options
  • Short-cuts, key-strokes, dragdrop, etc...
  • The "Grabber" captures "objects", not images

10
Development Stage 2
  • Add Training Layer on top of the simulation
  • Produces 3 modes Demo, Practice  Evaluation
  • Assima creates an intelligent tutorial path
    offering
  • Compulsary paths
  • Optional paths
  • An automatic check of data input
  • Suitable user messages
  • Output can be enriched with
  • Text, Sound other resources (AVI, PDF, PPT,
    HTML, etc...)

11
Automatic Document Generation
  • Single authoring session creates several forms of
    documentation
  • Templates available for each document with
bespoke Table of Contents, Custom Logos and
    Styles
  • Material can be published to a central repository
  • All in a matter of minutes

12
Localisation Process
  • An integrated automatic translation environment
helps you localise training materials quickly
    using built-in dictionaries.
  • Step 1 Extract the text from the object based
    simulation and/or tutorial
  • Step 2 Translate, using export methodology to
CSV files if necessary (not automatically
    translated)
  • Step 3 Publish your material to
    Intranet/Internet, CD or to Automatic
    Documentation Module

13
Publishing Options
  • Uses HTML Technology - NO plug-ins
  • Multi-lingual versions available with translation
    feature
  • Can publish in several types of Simulation modes
    Demo, Practice and Evaluation mode.
  • Publish to CD-ROM
  • Can publish creating an Internet Portal

14
Assima Key Benefits 1
  • Cost reduction no need to maintain a training
database, able to run without the real software
    on the PC.
  • Quality Creates fully interactive simulations.
Captures objects NOT screen-shots. Therefore it
exactly mimics the behaviour of the target
    application.
  • Ease of development No coding required. Can
therefore be used by functional experts and
    trainers alike. Automatic documentation
    generation.
  • Productivity gain on maintenance Offers
automatic QA, multi lingual , smart tutorial
    updates
  • Localisation costs are reduced Offers facility
to develop in source language but to publish
    automatically to many.
  • Usable straight away No plug-in required.
    Training resources are HTML compilant

15
Assima Key Benefits 2
  • Benefits for users
  • Unique in its ability to present a truely
life-like interactive simulation of the target
    environment
  • No requirement for the target application to be
    installed on users PC
  • Allows the users training and/or support on
demand as well as the facility for individual
    reporting of their results
  • Benefits for Project Team
  • Significantly reduces development and maintenance
    effort, thus reducing time-to-market
  • Automatically generates a variety of training and
    support media
  • Precludes the requirement to maintain a training
    database
  • Offers automatic QA facility
  • Features a unique automatic localisation facility

16
  • We built a technology that we needed as content
developers, and developed the software to make it
    available to customers
  • Integrate the content design and development
    process
  • Develop faster, better quality content
  • Ease the maintenance process
  • Manage localization
  • No tool on the market focuses on the story-board
  • Allow Subject Matter Experts to write synopsis
and storyboards in a dedicated environment
  • Allow customers to build Flash content without
    knowing Flash !
  • View the result immediately
  • Allow development capitalization
  • Reuse of models, templates, courses

How
  • Develop your look and feel and templates
    ( design model )
  • Or have it done by experts like us , or use the
    ones we provide
  • Define the structure of your course
  • Course, Lessons, Pages
  • Languages
  • Write the synopsis (option)
  • Hi level vision of the content
  • Story-board your content
  • Choose the page layout you will use (like in
    PowerPoint)
  • Modify it if you need to
  • Write the detailed content for each content page
  • Import the graphics you need
  • Preview the result of your work
  • Publish your content
  • Leverage what you do
  • The courses can be reused as templates for other
    courses
  • Integrate the content in an LMS (SCORM)

Learning Management
  • When the amount of content grows, new needs arise
  • Registration, Tracking, User mgt, Content
    library, Reporting
  • You need an LMS (Learning Management System)
  • We have the knowledge to customize these
applications to your company structure and needs.

22
Our philosophy
  • Keep it simple and efficient
  • A content is not a web site
  • Avoid the Las Vegas syndromes
  • What matters is that the learner . learns
  • Focus on the long term
  • Maintainability of content
  • Localization
  • Knowledge transfer for customer
  • Tools are useful, but they are only tools
  • Learn to use them, work as a team
  • Integration in a global learning plan.

23
Success factors in IT E-learning
  • Have a system you can maintain at a reasonable
cost. 50 of trainings are not up to date because
updating costs as much as creating a new one.
  • Think about training languages from the start.
    Easy translation must be possible
  • Think about the integrating the e-learning with
the help of the application at low cost.
  • Have small files for e-learning courses. More
than 0,5 Mb for one course does not work on
    remote sites.
  • Have interactive screens. On IT application,
Trainees need to receive the dedicated response
when they click on a wrong button / menu. They
have to play with the system to learn it.
  • A demo system is not an e-learning. (Kathy
    Chen-Wright)
  • Trainees must be able to follow the course
without installing any sw on their workstation.
