The Life of Joseph
  • Our resources are not our own.
  • Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt and
Potiphar, an Egyptian officer of Pharaoh, the
captain of the bodyguard, bought him from the
Ishmaelites, who had taken him down there. And
the LORD was with Joseph, so he became a
successful man. And he was in the house of his
    master, the Egyptian

6
The Life of Joseph
  • Now his master saw that the LORD was with him
and how the LORD caused all that he did to
prosper in his hand. So Joseph found favour in
his sight, and became his personal servant and
he made him overseer over his house, and all that
he owned he put in his charge. Genesis 39 1-4

7
The Life of Joseph
  • But the LORD was with Joseph and extended
kindness to him, and gave him favour in the sight
of the chief jailer. And the chief jailer
committed to Joseph's charge all the prisoners
who were in the jail so that whatever was done
there, he was responsible for it.
  • Genesis 39 21-22

8
The Life of Joseph
  • So Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Since God has
informed you of all this, there is no one so
discerning and wise as you are. You shall be
over my house, and according to your command all
my people shall do homage only in the throne I
will be greater than you." And Pharaoh said to
Joseph, "See I have set you over all the land of
    Egypt. Genesis 41 39-41

9
The Life of Joseph
  • 2. Our resources are part of a trusting
    relationship with God.
  • There is no one greater in this house than I,
and he has withheld nothing from me except you,
because you are his wife. How then could I do
this great evil, and sin against God?" Genesis
    39 9

10
The Life of Joseph
  • Then they said to him, "We have had a dream and
there is no one to interpret it." Then Joseph
said to them, "Do not interpretations belong to
God? Tell it to me, please." Genesis 40 8

11
The Life of Joseph
  • And Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I have had a dream,
but no one can interpret it and I have heard it
said about you, that when you hear a dream you
can interpret it." Joseph then answered Pharaoh,
saying, "It is not in me God will give Pharaoh a
    favorable answer." Gen. 41 15-16

12
The New Testament
  • What is the nature of our relationship with
    material goods?
  • "For what will it profit a man if he gains the
whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a
man give in exchange for his soul? Matthew 16
    26
  • Not that I speak from want, for I have learned
to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I
know how to get along with humble means, and I
also know how to live in prosperity in any and
every circumstance I have learned the secret of
being filled and going hungry, both of having
    abundance and suffering need. Philippians
    411-12

13
The Life of Joseph
  • 3. Our resources are designed to serve a greater
    purpose.
  • Then Joseph could not control himself before all
those who stood by him, and he cried, "Have
everyone go out from me." So there was no man
with him when Joseph made himself known to his
brothers. And he wept so loudly that the
Egyptians heard it, and the household of Pharaoh
heard of it. Then Joseph said to his brothers, "I
am Joseph! Is my father still alive?" But his
brothers could not answer him, for they were
    dismayed at his presence.

14
The Life of Joseph
  • Then Joseph said to his brothers, "Please come
closer to me." And they came closer. And he said,
"I am your brother Joseph, whom you sold into
Egypt. And now do not be grieved or angry with
yourselves, because you sold me here for God
sent me before you to preserve life. For the
famine has been in the land these two years, and
there are still five years in which there will be
    neither plowing nor harvesting.

15
The Life of Joseph
  • And God sent me before you to preserve for you a
remnant in the earth, and to keep you alive by a
great deliverance. Now, therefore, it was not you
who sent me here, but God and He has made me a
father to Pharaoh and lord of all his household
and ruler over all the land of Egypt. Genesis
    451-8
