Archiving

• In hard copy world numerous collections have
  title, if issue is damaged one can ask for
  replacement pages
• Larger scale replacements more difficult
• Redundant collections do preserve intellectual
  content

Electronic Archiving via LOCKSS

• Electronic journals becoming copy of record
• Redundant caches
• Better for large scale replacements
• Supports small publishers who have agreements
  with LOCKSS, they too can replace damaged copies

How it works

• Each participating library caches titles of their
  choices
• Can be a collection development type decision
  which title to cache
• But, if you dont cache a particular title you
  cant ask others for back copies

Safety

• Persistent preservation system
• Done through peer to peer polling by computer
• Damaged copies can be replaced

Nuts and Bolts

• Open Source
• Hardware not expensive, not high end and storage
  hardware becoming less expensive
• No individual library negotiations
• Publishers rights protected in the agreements
  with LOCKSS
