1
Business Intelligence at Avnet
  • Arthur Lynch
  • Management Info Systems

2
Avnet Inc
  • In 2004 Avnet made over 10 billion in revenue by
    selling electronic products and services
  • They are based in Phoenix, AZ, and sell their
    products in 68 different countries.
  • Work as a wholesaler, and creates and sells
    special embedded computing systems
  • Key player in the electronics supply chain

3
Growth Period
  • While growing Avnet acquired over 30 companies in
    the past 10 years.
  • They had growing pains and had financial
    reporting and accounting nightmares.
  • From 1997 to 2001 Avnet developed OLAP
applications that enabled managers to cut down
    the data depending on requirements.

4
OLAP and SAP
  • OLAP is an online analytical processing and is a
dynamic type of reproting systme that provieds
the ability to perform simple mathematical
    operations on groups of data.
  • Users can change the format of the reports while
    viewing them.
  • SAP provides diagrams to show business processes
that must be created to effectively use the
    software

5
  • When the company grew the OLAP became slower.
  • They redesigned the business intelligence systems
and aquired the add-on SAP product called
    Business Information Warehouse (SAP BW)
  • This provided better OLAP performance and
    reliability, and eased integration tasks.

6
Improved System
  • With the new system SAP BW and OLAP Avnet can
pull information from all the data sources into
    one place for easy access.
  • They can also get very detailed that would not
have been able to see with the old systems.
  • Users do not have to switch back and forth
    between info systems.
  • Instead they focus on analyzing the results which
    is the most important
