Title: Higher Education Cooperation' NMMU needs for mobility

1
Higher Education Cooperation. NMMU needs for
mobility
  • Dr Nico Jooste- Director International Education

2
Reciprocity
  • Reciprocus returning the same way.
  • The exchange programs are managed in such a way
that the benefit is not only for the individual
student but for the institution as a whole
  • Due to the financially disadvantaged nature of
the NMMU student body, incoming and outgoing
exchange programs have as their main focus to
create a diversified international experience at
    home experience

3
Rationale for exchange programmes
  • The internationalisation of NMMU envisaged that
exchange programmes will prepare the NMMU student
    to
  • know how to relate new knowledge to what is
    already known
  • be able to read the signals of an unfamiliar
situation, interpret its elements and relate them
    to each other
  • understand the process of cultural interaction
and be able to discern differences and
    similarities between cultures, including
differences within similarities and vice versa
  • be able to communicate with diverse groups
  • Be able to adjust to an environment without
losing ones identity and compromising ones
    values.

4
Expectations?
  • Of strategic importance. Improved student and
staff mobility Knowledge transfer in both
    directions.
  • The composition of the South African Student
    body.
  • Academic reality.
  • Language competency.
  • Financial need v/s real costs.
  • Student preparation.

5
Concluding remarks
  • NMMU have moved from the clear understanding of
it being returning the same way to equality of
    effort.
  • Universities and its internationalisation
activities have not escaped the influences of
    market forces.
  • The sending and receiving of exchange students is
seen as part of the process of developing an
Internationalised University and is not managed
as a single event on the Internationalisation
    calendar.
  • It is not ethical for a University to send
students on an exchange program if they will
suffer financially and thus not maximise the
    academic and cultural experience.
