What is AFIT?
  • A voluntary association representing fair trade
    beneficiaries in South Africa
  • Membership is limited to small-scale farmer
    organisations and representative bodies of
    workers on estates
  • The only legitimate mouthpiece of fair trade
    beneficiaries in South Africa

3
Why AFIT?
  • We as small-scale farmers and farm workers are
    isolated and uninformed about
  • fair trade as an ideal and a trading system
  • the fair trade standards
  • our rights as fair trade beneficiaries
  • how IFAT, FLO, FTSA etc. relate to one another
  • how Joint Bodies should be constituted and should
    function
  • sources of development assistance

4
How did AFIT come about?
  • We were aware that we were isolated from one
another, and discussed the problem with NGOs
  • A networking project was developed by EMG in
consultation with the Fair Trade Support Network
  • Funding was provided by Ford Foundation
  • A consultative workshop was held in Plettenberg
Bay, which led to the launch of AFIT in Grabouw
    on 12 May 2005
  • A constitution was adopted and a Management
    Committee was elected

5
Introducing our Management Committee
  • Nelie Kok, EFA Chairperson
  • Sidney Le Fleur, Ericaville FT Vice Chairperson
  • Gladys Xanywa, Nooigedacht Treasurer
  • Lestie Strauss, Heiveld Co-op Secretary
  • Pieter Engelbrecht, Erfdeel Farming Trust
  • Chreswell Isaacs, Haarlem Heuningbostee
  • Susanna Swartz, Vuki Farms

6
What can AFIT do for its members?
  • Create a network of mutual support and solidarity
  • Provide information to members
  • Help members to develop their capacities
  • Facilitate the sharing of knowledge and
    experiences
  • Help members to gain access to development
assistance from government and other agencies

7
What can AFIT do for partners in the fair trade
system?
  • Contribute to ensuring a high standard of fair
    trade producing organisations
  • Reduce risk for all participants in the system
  • Promote higher and more stable prices for South
    African fair trade products
  • Create a platform for the aspirations and view
point of beneficiaries to be expressed and
    addressed in a coherent way

8
Our Vision
  • Our vision is of an independent body which
provides effective representation for fair trade
    producers (small-farmers and farm-workers) in
South Africa and the wider world, and which
creates opportunities for its members and other
interested parties to build the necessary
capacities and understanding for the creation of
a fairer and more equitable agricultural sector
in SA, and which will serve to protect the ideals
    and trademarks of Fairtrade internationally.

9
Through this initiative opportunities will be
created for members to
  • Increase their production sustainably
  • Add more value to their products
  • Market their products more effectively locally
    and overseas
  • Promote improved education and healthcare in
    their communities
  • Ensure that all in their communities have access
    to social development
  • Acquire and retain Fairtrade accreditation
  • Create job opportunities in their broader
    community
  • Share information and knowledge with each other
  • Lobby together for fair prices for their products
  • Support and market one another's products

10
OBJECTIVES OF THE ASSOCIATION
  • Represent the interests of South African
    small-farmer organisations and representative
bodies of farm-workers on estates, which produce
goods for the fair trade market.
  • Promote the interests of its members and to
negotiate on their behalf with government and
    other institutions
  • Promote communication between interest groups
  • Provide information to interest groups and a
    wider audience.
  • Provide communication with, and representation on
national and international fair trade bodies

11
What do we intend to do?
  • Network and share information with all
  • Introduce ourselves to all stakeholders in the
    fair trade system
  • Join IFAT and participate internationally
  • Hold local information workshops in different
    regions
  • Monitor compliance with fair trade standards
(inside and outside the FLO system)
  • Make representations to FLO and other alternative
trading organisations in terms of any
non-compliances with the standards and principles
