Title: CERN Safety Alarm Monitoring (CSAM)

1
CERN Safety Alarm Monitoring (CSAM)
CERN Safety Alarm System Supervisory Board 8th
meeting Luigi Scibile CSAM project team
2
Mandate (Reminder)
  • Provide a Safety Alarm system covering
    acquisition, transmission, logging and display
for all the CERN sites, the LHC machine, LHC
    experiments and experimental areas.
  • Requirements defined by the AL3S working group.
  • Mandate covers
  • System specification
  • Prototyping
  • Tendering
  • Design
  • Installation
  • Integration.
  • Operation Maintenance

Current status
Safety alarms require the immediate
intervention of the fire brigade and are defined
at CERN as 'Alarms of Level 3' (AL3S)
3
Status report (Since last Supervisory Board)
  • Currently at the END of workpackage 1 - phase 2
  • Realisation completed
  • Factory Acceptance Tests running (see R.
    Bartolome)
  • Preparing for the Workpackage 2
  • Deployment plan for the LHC installation
  • CSAM included in the EVM
  • Budget - within cost to completion
  • Planning - aligned to LHC planning
  • New financial plan

4
System Realisation highlights
  • Integration of the firemen intervention drawings
  • Validation by TIS representatives
  • Validation by the TCR representatives
  • Quantitative safety validation
  • The final system has been simulated for the
evaluation of the RAMS figures and they are
    compliant to our requirements (SIL2).
  • Following the HazOp analysis, additional
modifications and procedures were added to
minimise, prevent or eliminated potential system
    failures.
  • FAT includes tests for the safety validation

7
Overall planning
  • Five months delay respect to the latest planning.
  • Problems with some delay/realisation issues
    (SOLVED)
  • Problems with the integration tests (SOLVED)
  • No additional costs on the system
  • Installation plan under revision with the firemen
    and the safety equipment groups
  • For the LHC it means the order of installation
  • These changes are foreseen in the contract

8
Overall budget
  • The project is on budget
  • A new financial plan was prepared to include the
    realisation delays.

9
Previous Financial Plan
10
New Financial Plan
11
Short-term milestones
  • Factory Acceptance tests completed by 19/9/2003
  • Site installation completed by 10/10/2003
  • Acceptance Testing by November 2003
  • If acceptance successful CSAM
    OPERATIONAL in SCR and TCR

12
Conclusions
  • CSAM within budget
  • CSAM delays not in the LHC critical path
  • New financial plan in line with previous
    estimations
  • Difficulties encountered by the contractors have
    been solved
  • Realisation meets technical and SIL2 safety
    requirements
