The aim is to ensure local people live longer
and healthier lives.
  • The health and well being of local people to be
    maximised

between the borough and other areas to be reduced

4
What has been achieved?
  • Over the past year, the main focus of activity
has centred around 3 main areas
  • Work to reduce inequalities in health
  • Tackle obesity and the big killer diseases
coronary heart disease (CHD) and cancer
  • Work towards making Gateshead a smoke-free
community has led to smoking rates falling closer
    to the national average
  • Improvements in indicators
  • Overall performance is is very positive with 12
of the 21 indicators improving or staying the
same (some are already at 100) Also, 80 of the
    targets have been met.

5
What has been achieved?
  • The deaths rates from Coronary Heart Disease
(CHD) are reducing and are also starting to make
improvements in tackling deaths from cancer.
  • Whilst there has been an increase in the number
of Teenage Pregnancies, performance is still the
best in the Tyne and Wear area and the whole of
    the North.
  • BUT
  • Overall, the infant mortality rate of 5.9 deaths
under the age of one per 1,000 births in
Gateshead is now close to the national average of
5.3 but it is still 2½ times higher in lower
    social classes.
  • Although we are starting to narrow the inequality
gap, people in Gateshead live, on average, two
years less than in other parts of the country.

6
What has been achieved?
  • Making Gateshead a Smoke-Free Community
  • Through use of the Smoking Cessation Service, 87
pregnant women quit smoking last year compared
    with 29 the year before.
  • Activity is also going on to stop young people
from starting to smoke in the first place.
  • Gateshead College, the Sage Gateshead, the
MetroCentre and Gateshead Interchange all have
    smoke free policies.
  • The national Clean Air Award was launched in
    Gateshead during March 2005.

7
What has been achieved?
  • Improving our knowledge and information about the
health of the people of Gateshead.
  • The Health and Lifestyle survey in the adult
population of Gateshead was completed in 2004.

    Gateshead in May 2004
  • Last summer, the third Young Peoples Health
Related Behaviour Survey was conducted in local
    schools.

8
What has been achieved?
  • Reducing Obesity

    Improving Nutrition and Tackling Obesity.

    programme

developed, linked to a pathway of care for
    overweight and obese children.

Collaborative, with 7 teams in local communities
    with a focus on nutrition

  • The Gateshead Opportunities for Active
Lifestyles (GOALS) programme continues to expand
with 95 of GP practices in Gateshead now able to
    refer patients
  • The Peer Activity Motivator Scheme is training
older people to support others back into exercise

10
What has been achieved?
  • Tackling health inequalities through good
    practice sharing
  • The Councils partnership work to improve the
health of local people has achieved a Beacon
Council Award in the theme Promoting Healthy
    Communities.
  • We are also part of two national initiatives
aimed at improving the health of local people -
one of 15 Pathfinder Councils on the Shared
Priority Programme and one of 22 Councils on the
    Communities for Health initiative.

11
Have we made a difference?
  • Worked towards making Gateshead a smoke free
community - smoking rates are falling in
Gateshead and are now closer to the national
    average
  • Reduced inequalities in health - lower death
rates from circulatory diseases and we have
started to impact on cancer rates
  • Continued the positive trend in reducing
    unintended teenage pregnancies
  • There has been an improvement in the number of
    mothers breastfeeding

12
What do we want to do next?
  • Challenges
  • Choosing Health making healthier choices easier
  • Local Public Service Agreements
  • Local Area Agreement
  • We want to
  • Continue to work towards a Smoke Free Gateshead
  • Promote healthier lifestyles particularly for 18-
    24 year olds
  • Address inclusion/involvement issues and involve
BME and faith communities, refugees and asylum
seekers in establishing their health needs
