7Our goals with software
8On software platforms
- Open platforms, to carry out software development
of FT applications. - Same OS environment accross devices.
- We dont want to develop too many versions of our
specific applications. - Open on-the-shelf applications.
- For customisation of look and feel icons, etc
- France Telecom/Home is OS-agnostic.
9For Cost and Time-to-market Savings
- Choose best in class applications from
application vendors market. - Quality, standard compliance and price.
- Our platforms need to be standard for that.
- Improve sourcing of apps, with Orange/France
Telecom convergence. - Same application set accross devices, to improve
interoperability with our platforms. - Codecs and protocols recommendation of proven
software modules, already tested against our
platforms. - Remember Device management helps on money,
time-to-market, service push, bug fixing.
10Threats we want to avoid
- Fragmentation of OS brands, of Application
brands, of Protocols stack brands. - Closed platforms.
- Proprietary platforms.
11Actors
Device manufacturers
Software vendors
Chipset vendors
Telcos
- Provide software reference implementations for
their chipsets. - We need to influence them.
- ?HGDR
- ?Meetings
- ?LiPS
- Build devices according to telcos requirements.
- We need to make them know our requirements and
roadmap. - ?HGDR
- ?RFP, RFQ
- Should have common requirements on software,
while leaving space for differenciation. - ? OMTP ?
- Sell software to chipset, device and telcos.
12Conclusion
13A new paradigm
- Up to recently, FT only bought on-the-shelf
devices, with little customisation. - And Device manufacturers used to build closed,
limited devices. - A new echosystem has to be put in place if we,
operators, want to succeed in software. - Actions have already been successfully put in
place HGDR, OMTP, LiPS, RFP to manufacturers,
Development contracts - We must continue these actions.
- Other parallel paths must be studied Service
