What are Subject Centres? Subject Centres are a
UK-wide initiative supported by the four Higher
Education Funding Councils in order to enhance
the student learning experience. They work with
departments and individuals who support student
learning. They provide discipline specific
support for discussion, dissemination and
innovation in all aspects of learning, teaching
and assessment.
What is the Subject Centre Network? There are 24
Subject Centres, covering all disciplines within
Higher Education, together they form the Subject
Centre Network. The Subject Centres are based at
Higher Education Institutions across the UK

- Bioscience
- Built Environment (CEBE)
- Business, Management, Accountancy and
Finance (BMAF) - Economics
- Education (ESCALATE)
- Engineering
- English
- Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
(GEES) - Health Sciences and Practice
- History, Classics and Archaeology
- Hospitality, Leisure, Sport and Tourism (HLST)
- Information and Computer Sciences
- Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies (LLAS)
- Law (UK Centre for Legal Education - UKCLE)
- Materials (UK Centre for Materials Education)
- Maths, Stats OR Network (MSOR)
- Subject Centres can also provide opportunities
- to influence and contribute to policy
development in higher education teaching and
learning through surveys, focus groups and
responding to proposals. - for interdisciplinary collaboration
- to meet and network with fellow staff interested
in teaching and learning in higher education.
