  • The Missouri Association of Nurse Anesthetists
    (MoANA) has more than 700 members.
  • MoANA was founded in 1935 by 15 charter members,
    including Helen Lamb of St. Louis.
  • Lamb became the first president of MoANA and
    later served as president of the American
    Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA).
  • Lamb was also director of one of the first
    schools of nurse anesthesia, begun in 1929 at
    Barnes Hospital
  • in St. Louis.

  • The Barnes School of Nurse Anesthesia was proudly
    in existence since 1929.
  • On October 1, 1983, the certificate program was
    moved to Washington University School of Medicine
    Department of Anesthesiology.
  • The certificate program graduated its last
    official class in August of 1994.

  • The program was moved to SIU, Edwardsville, IL
    where it became a masters prepared program.
  • The Washington University Anesthesiology
    Department then educated nurse anesthesia
    students from SIU until a new program was started
    on campus.
  • The program, started in 2004, is now called the
    Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes-Jewish
    College in St. Louis, MO. The clinical experience
    is conducted by the Washington University
    Department of Anesthesiology at Barnes-Jewish
    Hospital and also St. Louis Childrens Hospital.
