Student and Instructor AdoptionMaximizing the
Impact of Tablet PCs in the Classroom

• Tablet PCs stand ready to change the classroom
  environment. Ubiquitous Presenter (UP) has shwon
  exciting results in engaging students in
  multimodal participatory learning. However,
  barriers to broad-scale adoption exist.
• Instructors already engage a broad spectrum of
  pedagogical styles well-honed to succeed in
  their classrooms and drawing on their stylistic
  strengths. We must develop support for a broad
  range of interaction styles to order to attract
  large-scale faculty interest. Additionally, we
  hope to import valuable pedagogical techniques to
  Computer Science instructive practice.
• Students need to be supported in a confluence of
  Tablet-engaging lecture-centric activities to
  buy into the value of Tablet PCs in the
  classroom. Lecture-contextualized note-taking is
  a key application that will break the spatial
  challenge that pits technology against pencil and
  paper on the desk. Student control over
  interaction modality leads to greater creativity
  and higher participation levels. Support for
  effective review of instructor, self, and
  classmate generated materials in synchrony will
  be a key research question.
