The Georgia Reading Consortium
  • Convened in 1998 by Jan Kettlewell, Assistant
    Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the
    request of deans from the University System.
  • Involves faculty from 14 institutions,
    representatives from the Department of Education,
    Board of Regents, PSC, and classroom teachers.
  • Is supported through Regent funding of a Center
    currently housed at Georgia State University.

USG Reading Consortium Center Goals
  • Monitor the  effectiveness of the Consortium
    efforts at improving literacy in the state of
    Georgia.
  • Provide a yearly conference that links state-wide
    participants in  Reading Endorsement programs.
  • Increase public awareness and understanding of
    effective approaches  that can improve the
    reading abilities of all P-12 students of 
    Georgia.
  • Conduct and disseminate research on the effective
    teaching of  reading.
  • Promote dialogue and collaboration on the
    effective teaching of  reading across consortium
    members from University System institutions, the
    Board of Regents, the Professional Standards
    Commission, and the Department of Education.
