Jesus Is Our Good Shepherd!
  • Jn. 1011, 14 I am the good shepherd
  • Jesus never takes His sheep anywhere that He
    has not first gone!
  • He simply leads and says, Follow Me
  • Discipleship is following Jesus!

4
When He Spoke Of Discipleship
  • Calling His Disciples Follow Me
  • They left all to follow Him (Luke 51-11)
  • Even left family (Matthew 422)
  • The rich young ruler Matthew 1920-22
  • He Was not just calling them to forsake
things, but to follow Him, learn from Him,
    and become like Him!

5
When He Spoke Of Discipleship
  • Still looks for the same brand of person today!
  • There will be a cost to being His disciple!
  • Jesus often freely spoke of the cost of
    discipleship (Luke 1433 Mk 1028-30)
  • Why is this such a big deal?
  • Its all about our obedience
  • Its all about our priorities
  • Its all about our commitment

6
When He Spoke Of Discipleship
  • Jesus is not asking us to do anything He has not
    already done!
  • He gave up the glories of Heaven
  • He gave up the in person relationship with
His Father and the Holy Spirit
  • He took on also took on a role of submission
that is carried through into eternity!
  • Father / Son relationship assumed
  • Phil 25-8
  • I Corinthians 1524-28

7
When He Spoke Of His Voice
  • Relationship of the sheep to the Shepherd
  • John 102-5
  • Hear His voice and follow Him (vs. 27)
  • The sheep hear Him and only Him!

8
When He Spoke Of His Voice
  • Those who claim to be disciples yet are not
    following His voice!
  • Follow his voice in many aspects, but not in
all things (Rev. 2218-19 Luke 646)
  • Those who claim to follow His voice but
follow other things as well John 105

9
When He Spoke Of His Voice
  • Are we heeding to following His voice?
  • Many voices are bidding for Jesus sheep
  • Do we follow the voice of Jesus or the voices
in the world? (I Cor. 118-25)
  • What I want, seek, and my goals must become
what Jesus is trying to produce in me! (Rom
    121-2)
  • Out of all of the voices, which voice do you
    line up behind?

10
When He Spoke Of His Death
  • When speaking of His crucifixion He simply said,
    Follow Me! (Mt. 1621-26)
  • Each one of us MUST take up the instrument of
death and follow Him (vs. 24)
  • A loss of life will occur, but only in order to
    gain true life (vs. 25)
  • If we gain the world but miss this, weve
    missed it all! (vs. 26)
  • This is a spiritual crucifixion where one dies
    to sin!

11
When He Spoke Of His Death
  • This too is an inseparable aspect of
    discipleship! (Rom 61ff)
  • We are picking up the instrument of death,
you die, and gain true life!
  • Relationship attitude toward sin changes
  • Our death to sin must be in the same nature as
    Jesus (Rom 69-11)
  • Are you living as though you are alive to sin
    or dead to sin?

12
After The Resurrection
  • Peter must have thought everything was all over!
  • Jesus instructions to Peter (John 2117-19)
  • Peter is not going down a road that Jesus has
    not first went down himself!

13
After The Resurrection
  • In all of our lives Jesus simply whispers the
    words, Follow Me!
  • Heartaches and Sufferings (John 1133-36)
  • In Temptation (Heb 414-15 218 416)
  • In Persecution (John 1415)
  • We can find strength and comfort in the Captain
    Of Our Salvation (Heb 29-10)

14
  • But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower
than the angels, for the suffering of death
crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the
grace of God, might taste death for everyone. For
it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things
and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons
to glory, to make the captain of their salvation
    perfect through sufferings.
  • Hebrews 29-10

15
Conclusion
  • Discipleship is all about following Jesus
  • We must be willing to pay the cost, follow
Him, learn from Him, and be like Him
  • We must follow His voice His voice alone
  • We must follow Him in His death
  • We must follow Him in His life
  • Jesus still waits and longs to have you follow
    Him!

16
  • Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden,
and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you
and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in
heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For
My yoke is easy and My burden is light. (Matt
    1128-30)
