Title: Wisconsin FDMS FDMSTEOM Network Review Analysis

1
  • Wisconsin FDMS - FDMS-TEOM Network Review
    Analysis
  • EPA Region 5 Contacts Meeting
  • March 7, 2007
  • Steve Schuenemann Bart Sponseller

2
Wisconsin FDMS-TEOM Network Review Analysis
  • Purpose
  • Analyze available FDMS-TEOM information to
    support QMP and/or SOP revision
  • Goal
  • FDMS-TEOM network that provides
  • accurate reliable continuous PM measurements as
a basis for Air Quality forecasting
  • data comparable to FRM gravimetric method
  • continuous PM measurements that are comparable
    statewide, regionally and nationally
  • Reasons for the 2006 FDMS-TEOM Network Review
  • Network inconsistency
  • Certain monitors tracked closely to the FRM
method, while others were 70 to 90 high or low
  • Noticed individuality of monitors exhibited
    unique behavioral characteristics
  • Changes in configuration of all monitors over
time resulted in poor intersite comparability
  • Regional Equivalency
  • Air quality watches/advisories based on reported
    FDMS-TEOM measurements

Data Comparison Approaches
  • Approaches
  • Compare FDMS-TEOM to FRM
  • Compare FDMS-TEOM to FDMS-TEOM multi-site
  • Consider age of transducers other components
  • Consider operator hands-on or leave it be
  • Consider location
  • Urban vs Rural
  • Near Lake Michigan vs Inland
  • Track major equipment changes e.g. dryer
    replacement

Conclusions
  • Dryer reconditioning/replacement is critical.
  • High FDMS-TEOM values at Waukesha, FAA
Manitowoc were likely high due to moisture
  • Noticed potential failing dryers at other sites
  • Results of analysis have guided FDMS-TEOM SOP
    development
  • SOP will require annual preventive maintenance
schedule each spring prior to O3 season.

Questions?
  • Why are FDMS-TEOM values now consistently lower
    than FRM at FAA SER/HQ?
  • Would operating a FDMS-TEOM with a failed dryer
have an impact on other components? Would it
cause excess wear deterioration of other parts
    such as sensors or valves?
  • What do high - volatile channel values tell
    us?
