Title: LAKER P'L'A'Y'

1
LAKER P.L.A.Y. DEFENSE
3rd and 4th Grade
2
Defensive Philosophy
We will be an aggressive react and attack
defense with the ability to utilize multiple
fronts to counter all offensive schemes.
We will dictate the flow of the game through
sound tackling, relentless pursuit, and the
ability to create turnovers. Our
defensive players will accomplish this by being
disciplined, intelligent, and relentless
competitors.
3
Defensive Positive Control
  • Control Field Position
  • Create Turnovers
  • Score on Defense
  • Stop Offense in Short Yard and Goal Line
Situations (Take PRIDE on defending your goal
    line!)
  • Do Not Give Up the Big Play
  • Out Number The Offensive Players at the Point of
    Attack
  • Relentless Pursuit to the Football
  • Force the Offense to Make Adjustments
  • (Stop the run, force them to pass.)

4
Basic Defensive Fundamentals
  • Pads Beyond Your Toes Do Not Catch
  • Shoulders Squared at All times
  • Play side Arm and Leg Free
  • Make Contact with Your Hands and/or Shoulder Pads
Nothing else, never let a blocker get into your
    legs
  • Fight Pressure Go the Hard Way
  • Keep a Wide Powerful Base
  • Eyes Up at All Times
  • Relentless Pursuit to the Football
  • Stay on Your Feet
  • Tackle, Tackle, Tackle

5
Defensive Coaches
  • Buy Into What our Defensive Scheme is Trying To
    Accomplish.
  •
  • Sell the Defense to the Kids and Make them
    Believe in our System
  •
  • Understand the Basics of Our Defensive Scheme
  •
  • Teach the Basics of Our Defensive Scheme to the
    Best of Your Ability
  •
  • Take Teaching Slow and Make Sure They are
Age-Appropriate. At the Lower Levels Stress the
Basics (Alignment, Responsibility, Pursuit to the
Football, and Tackling) Over Having a Detailed
    Scheme.
  •
  • Offer Suggestions for Scheme and Ask Questions at
the Appropriate Times (Not During Drills or
During Scheme, and NEVER Question Our Scheme in
    Front of The Kids).
  •
  • Teach Defense With Great Enthusiasm and
Intensity. Never Settle For Good Enough, Hold
    Players Accountable for Perfect Practice.

6
Defensive Coaches
  • My Goals as a Defensive Staff
  • Work Hard and Work Together as a Staff on Whats
Best for the Success of Our Football Team
  • Create a Sense of Defensive Pride Among Players
    of All Levels
  •
  • To Integrate Varsity Defensive Scheme and
Terminology Into the Lower Levels of Our Football
    program
  •
  • To Improve the Defensive Basics of Our Lower
Levels (Alignment, Responsibility, Pursuit to the
    Football, and Tackling)
  •
  • To Integrate Some Varsity Practice Expectations
Into the Lower Levels (ex. Finish with a Form
Tackle, 11 Guys at the Football)
  •
  • Ultimately, to Have Defensive Success and Fun at
All Levels every Season, which In-Turn Will Give
Us that Boost for Years to Come
  •
