3Different formats for information
- Talking to an expert!
- Books, including reference books such as
encyclopedias, handbooks, directories - Periodical/journal/magazine papers, also called
articles - Conference papers (meetings, symposia)
- Postgraduate Theses (plural of thesis), called
Dissertations in USA - Reports e.g. SAE papers, NATOs RTO (Research
and Technology Organization), NATOs AGARD
(Advisory Group for Aerospace Research and
Development) - Patents
- Standards
- Web pages
4Why do we need to carefully reference (cite) the
information sources we have used?
- Help our readers find the information we have
used and recommend, so that they can read it
themselves - Credit the originator of the work or ideas
- Support the validity of your work by showing you
know about recent developments, the scientific
and engineering basis, and that you understand
how your work relates to the work of others - Protect yourself from accusations of plagiarism,
that is, stealing other peoples work and ideas - If you reference badly, you will lose marks

paper) Title Turbulent flow computation /
edited by D. Drikakis and B.J. Geurts. Publication

7The data you need to write a reference to a book
with authors
- Book author(s) or editor(s)
- (Year of Publication)
- Title of book (in italics)
- Edition (if later than the first)
- Page numbers
- Publication information principal location
publisher - ISBN is not part of the standard APA reference
but is useful - The name of the series can be added after the
publisher if you think the series will help to
identify the book - Standard reference/citation
- Drikakis, D. and Geurts, B. J. eds. (2002).
Turbulent flow - computation. Berlin Springer. (3-540-57704-1)

9What types of information do you need to
reference?
- All information which you obtain from books,
periodicals, interviews, the Web, etc must be
cited/referenced - Only your own ideas and common knowledge do not
need referencing - What is common knowledge? If its in ordinary
textbooks, and its not referenced, thats
common knowledge for that subject - Note that if large sections of your report are
quotations from other peoples work, there is
less of your original work to earn marks
10Examples of making a citation within the text
Harvard system author/date
- At every point in the text at which reference is
made to a particular document, include the
author's surname and the year of publication in
parentheses. e.g. In a recent study (Bader 1997),
it ..... If the author's name occurs naturally in
the sentence, it is sufficient to give the year
of publication alone. e.g. Bader (1997),
discusses the ..... If there are two authors,
give the surnames of both. If there are three, at
the first citing, give all three names and the
date after that, give the surname of the first
followed by et al. e.g. Lee and Bader (1997)
report .... e.g. In an earlier study (Lee et al.
1993) ..... If there are four or more authors,
give the surname of the first followed by et al.
If the same author or combination of authors have
published more than one cited document in the
same year, distinguish between these by adding
lower case letters (a,b,c,d etc.) e.g. Bader
(1994a) notes that .... e.g. Bader (1994b)
reports ... - You may refer to specific pages in a work by
putting the page numbers after the year, e.g.
Bader (197257-85).

physics. 41, (17) 1 September, pp. 2079-2089. - (You can tell it is a paper in a
periodical/journal/magazine - because of the volume number, and the page
numbers. You will not find the authors or title
of the paper in the Queen Mary Library catalogue,
only the title of the whole periodical Journal
of polymer science.) - Lauder, M. A., Dabnichki, P. and Bartlett, R. M.

17Using EndNote Web to collect your references
- EndNote Web is a personal bibliographic
management system, designed to help you build
your own library of references to books, journal
articles etc, and the software can produce
bibliographies of your references in any style of
your choice - Show Getting Started Guide
- You can share folders of references with your
group project colleagues - See QM Help interactive videos
18Downloading your selected references from
Compendex for EndNote Web
- Brief instructions only
- Click Download
- Select RIS, EndNote format
- Click Download, Save to Disc
- Then open a new Browser window
- Go to Finding information Engineering, click
EndNote web - You need to Sign up for an account
- Import your downloaded file, using the filter Ei
Compendex (Ei)
19Web of Knowledge includes Web of Science,
Science citation index You can download your
marked references directly to EndNote Web
