  • What is it?
  • It is a straight-forward, child-centred
    assessment of the needs, status and outcomes for
    each child
  • It is an international standard, supported by
    USAID and other NGOs. Already adopted in Rwanda
    and Ethiopia

  • What does it do?
  • Focuses on the child
  • Records a childs progress as s/he grows up
  • Helps to ensure that all areas of a childs life
    are monitored
  • It is repeated, preferably twice a year, is
    consistent and can be used by all those providing
    services for children

  • Is it the same as the Quality Assurance and
    Improvement Framework (QAI)?
  • No it links closely with the QAI but does not
    duplicate it
  • QAI is about the services that are provided
  • Child Status Index is about the child

  • Why use the CSI?
  • It will help you evaluate each childs
    development
  • Where a child is thriving, it will give good
    feedback to the staff, caregivers and families
  • If a child is not making good progress, it will
    help to identify which areas are causing concern

  • There are 6 domains each with 2 factors covering
  • Food and nutrition
  • Shelter and care
  • Protection
  • Health
  • Psychosocial (see next slides)
  • Education and skills
  • Each factor assessed on a scale of 1 - 4

  • How often should each child be assessed?
  • Target is to assess each child every 6 months
  • Create a record over time of each childs
    development
  • Family, caregivers and others involved with child
    can contribute to the CSI

  • From the internet Google CSI and find lots of
    information
  • Sentebale will have pilot sites with its partners
    and will feed back on progress to Letsema
