2The Water Cycle or Hydrologic Cycle is an
unending circulation of Earths limited amount of
water above, on, and below the surface of the
Earth.
3This enormous system is driven by energy from the
Sun.
Oceans, Rivers, Streams, and Lakes
4Water may be stored briefly in the ground in
oceans, lakes, streams, and rivers, ice caps and
glaciers.
5The water cycle consists of
- Evaporation
- Transpiration
- Condensation
- Transport
- Precipitation
- Infiltration
- Ground Water
- Runoff
- Surface Runoff
- Subsurface Runoff
- Storage or Collection
-
Transport
Runoff
6- Evaporation
- Occurs when the Sun heats up water and turns it
into vapor. The water vapor goes into the air.
7- Transpiration
- Happens when plants give off water vapor
through tiny pores in their leaves. This water
vapor goes into the atmosphere.
8- Condensation
- The water vapor in the air gets cold and
changes back to water droplets forming clouds.
9- Transport
- Is when the water vapor is carried by the
wind over land. Some of the transport is
visible as clouds.
10- Precipitation
- Occurs when the clouds cant hold more
moisture. The clouds get heavy and water falls
back to the earth in the form of rain, snow, etc.
11- Storage or Collection
- When water falls back to Earth as
precipitation, it may fall back in oceans,
lakes or rivers or it may end up on land.
12- The precipitation that falls into the ocean
- has completed its cycle and is ready to begin
another
13- But, what happens to precipitation once it has
fallen on land?
14- Infiltration
- Happens when water soaks into the ground,
slowly moving downward through cracks and
spaces between soil and rocks.
Infiltration
15- Groundwater
- Is simple water under the ground. It is the
largest reservoir of fresh water. It moves
slowly underground to streams and rivers.
16- Runoff
- Water that flows over the land (surface) or
underground (subsurface) into lakes, streams,
drains, sewers and eventually to the oceans
rather than infiltrating into the ground.
17Could you mention one of the steps that takes
place in the Water Cycle?
18How does water get into the ocean?
19Water Fun Facts
- About two thirds of your body is made up of
water. - Three quarters of your brain consists of water.
20- Water is the only thing in nature that can be a
gas, liquid, or solid. - There is water in the air you are breathing. You
cant see it, because it is in the form of an
invisible gas called water vapor.
21- Clouds are formed of water droplets and/or ice
crystals - held together.
- Rain clouds have lots of ice crystals and big,
heavy raindrops. These can block out the Sun.
22- In twenty minutes, one thunderstorm can send down
over 125 millions of gallons of water!
23- There is almost exactly the same amount of water
on Earth now as there was when the dinosaurs
lived.
24- It takes two gallons of water to brush your teeth.
- Two to seven gallons to flush a toilet.
- Twenty five to fifty gallons to take a shower.
25Do you remember the different states of matter
in which water can exist?
26The Earths water supply is made up of
27Water on Earth has passed through the Water
Cycle countless times
